Who we are
The Maplewood Church of Christ has been serving the Cahokia area since 1952. We have enjoyed growth and have sorrowed over dear losses over the years. We are God fearing believers who strive to follow in the footsteps of Jesus: "...love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another..." John 13:34-35 (ESV); and in accordance with His teachings through the Apostles instructions "...faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love..." I Corinthians 13:13 (ESV)
This love, as Jesus loved us, is one of sacrifice and servanthood. As the Apostles instruct us "...Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things..." I Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV)
As baptized believers of God and followers of Jesus, His only son, we worship in spirit and truth: Worldly and religious "me-to" trends, activities, entities, etc. are all discouraged to insure worship to God is pure and uninfluenced by the world. You can expect Biblical worship that includes singing; prayer; partaking of the Lord's supper in unity; Bible study for spiritual growth, encouragement, and enlightenment: - all purposed for the assembly of Christians.
To/for those seeking to know God and His way - we offer and provide individual Bible study and online Bible correspondence courses (through www.worldbibleschool.org). We provide a community outreach to encourage those seeking the Lord.

Maplewood Church of Christ History
The Maplewood congregation was formed in 1944 from among several families who were members of the Rosemont Church of Christ - those who lived in Dupo and in the unincorporated Village of Maplewood Park (annexed later into the Village of Cahokia). Our nation was engaged in World War II and gasoline was rationed. Consequently, these families had great difficulty, even with car pooling, in meeting with the saints for all of the designated services. As is often the case, adversity resulted in the scattering and growing of the kingdom.
There were 117 present for the first service on February 6, 1944. Bro. Otis J. Harmon delivered the sermon on that day and the contribution was $75.25. Services were conducted in the 36’ x 40’ basement which the men of the new congregation had constructed at a cost of $1,605.14 on two lots that had cost $800.00. We still have faithful Charter members attending present day Maplewood Church of Christ congregation.
In 1949, the auditorium was constructed onto the 1944 basement/foundation. The basement became classrooms, fellowship hall, toilets and kitchen area.
On March 9, 1950, the Maplewood Church of Christ was incorporated under the State of Illinois Religious Corporation Act as a Religious Corporation. The original Trustee’s were Clarence Langwith, Elmer Williams, Bertran Douglas, and James Harris.
In April, 1962, started on a new auditorium building constructed adjacent to the existing building. It would have a seating capacity of 525, toilets and cry room, and an enclosed breezeway that connected the two structures. The 1944 structure was renovated into an educational building with toilets, fellowship room with kitchen. On June 2, 1963, a dedication service was held attended by 288 – 25 were of the original group who attended the first services. Robert C. Hampton was the minister at this time and preached the first sermon in the new auditorium: It was an exciting time in our history. At this time, membership was at 200.
As we think upon the accomplishments it is only fitting and proper that we consider those who labored among before us and those today. A host of others, though not elders, deacons, or ministers at Maplewood, have quietly used their talents to encourage, serve, and touch many souls. God has used many human instruments to accomplish His purpose at the Maplewood Church of Christ. As time marches on there will no doubt be other changes in the congregation and to our facilities which we will see and probably remember well. Many will also continue to touch the souls of men with the Gospel. Only in eternity, where there will be no buildings like we have built here, will all the works of God’s faithful here at Maplewood be revealed and preserved.
