Joe grew up in a southern suburb of Chicago. He attended local public schools, was later homeschooled, and completed his high school education at a small Christian school. There was very little difference between his Christian school classmates and his unbelieving friends. It was in that environment that he realized that being a Christian is not something you simply say you are, but rather something you are.
The Holy Spirit began convicting him about this and it was sometime after that Joe accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. As he grew in his relationship with Jesus, he was baptized at the age of 18 and dedicated his life to serving the Lord as He saw fit.
After high school, Joe graduated in 2002 with an Associate in Missionary Preparation. Believing the Lord led him to serve in a United States local church, he partnered with the Pastor at Maranatha Baptist Church in Grayslake, Illinois, serving from 2002–2019. During the time he served as assistant pastor, he was working with the next generation to teach them Biblical principles, encourage them in their sanctification, and strove to equip them to live as believers in a fallen world. During this whole tenure, he worked various full-time jobs, all giving him that ability to provide for his family while ministering alongside his Pastor.
In 2019 continuing to work-time, Joe went back to school full-time, completing his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Bible in 2022. He and his family are thrilled to be back in the church they have known and served alongside for many years.
Pastor Joe and Becca have been married since 2005, and they have three children Taylor, Joey, and Mya.

Maranatha Baptist Church History
Maranatha Baptist Church was started as a mission project under the Association of Independent Baptist Churches of Illinois (AIBCI). Dr. Wesley Potter and Rev. Michael Garrison were appointed as missionaries under AIBCI for the purpose of starting this new church in the northern suburbs of Chicago. They rented an abandoned park building from the City of Vernon Hills and began canvassing the community. The first service was held on January 18, 1987.
The church was incorporated and chartered on December 3, 1989. Twenty-seven men and women signed the charter. When Pastor Potter retired in 1990, Pastor Garrison became senior pastor and assumed full responsibility for the ministry.
In April, 1990, Maranatha Baptist Church purchased five acres of property just south of the City of Grayslake in unincorporated Lake County. After annexing into Grayslake, rezoning the property, and drawing up blueprints, construction began on a new, 10, 200 sq. ft. building. Church members rolled up their sleeves and, under the supervision of Pastor Garrison, provided nearly all the skill and labor necessary to construct the new church. The building was dedicated in July, 1994. Since then we’ve completed 3 additional building projects along with several renovations and upgrades.
Besides all the regular and special meetings and ministries, Maranatha has managed to support missions in excess of $500,000. We have also sent 39 of our own people on short-term mission trips all over the world.
God is so good! He has blessed this ministry in extraordinary ways and has shown His faithfulness and sufficiency over and over again. Praise the Lord for His goodness!
In January of 2023 Pastor Joe Bauwens and his family were called to be the new pastor following the retirement of Pastor Garrison.

Forgive us
O God, forgive the poverty and the pettiness of our prayers . Listen not to our words but to the yearnings of our hearts. Hear beneath our petitions the crying of our need.
