Mary Our Queen Church History
Mary Our Queen Catholic Church
The parish of Mary Our Queen was established by the late Archbishop Henry J. O’Brien on September 21, 1961.Until the appointment of Rev. James J. Sullivan, the growing town of Southington was served primarily by St. Thomas Parish: with facilities that were designed for half the numbers, St. Thomas enrolled over 3000 families. Father James J. Sullivan was the founding pastor of Mary Our Queen Parish. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new church took place on December 8, 1963, and the church was dedicated on April 25, 1965. Until the church was ready for use, Mass was celebrated in South End School. In November of 1964, Mass was moved to the hall which had been completed by then. It is interesting to note that Mary Our Queen was the first church in the Archdiocese that was built to fulfill the requirements of the liturgy mandated by the Second Vatican Council.
In June of 1983, failing health forced Father Sullivan to retire, and Father Arthur J. DuPont was appointed pastor by Archbishop John F. Whealon. A new rectory was built next to the church, and Father DuPont took up residency there in April of 1984, In October of 1989, ground was broken for a new educational wing attached to the parish hall. This wing contains seven classrooms, as well as office space. The religious education center was dedicated by Archbishop Whealon on September 23, 1990 and classes began the following day.
In the year 2021, with a steady decline in priests and parishioners continuing in the Catholic population, St. Thomas Church, Immaculate Conception Church, and St. Dominic Church were beginning the start of a townwide merge and parishioners began to attend Masses at the two merged church buildings. In the fall of 2022, the merge of St. Thomas Parish, St. Dominic Parish, Immaculate Conception Parish, Mary Our Queen Parish, and St. Aloysius Parish into St. Luke Parish became formalized.

Abide with us
O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Be with us in our silence and in our speech, in our haste and in our leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening; and give us grace at all times humbly to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.
