Church history
The Merrillan Methodist Church was formed in the spring of 1870 when prayer meetings were conducted by the town's founder, Benjamin H. Merrill, at a hotel.
The first minister, Rev. Wm. Massey, arrived in the fall of 1870 and held meetings in a hall over a store.
In the spring of 1878 a church, 32 x 55 feet with a 70 foot spire was built. The first services were held in the new church on Dec. 15,1878, with Rev. Hackney as pastor. In the 1800's congregations were large, with 200-250 and frequently more in attendance.
The Merrillan Church edifice was the only church building in Merrillan until the early 1940's and was unique in that it ministered for many years to people of all denominations.
12/15/1878 First services held in new church
1881 Tornado badly damaged steeple and cracked plaster
1882 Steeple rebuilt and outside painted
1883 Bell tower which 'stood so long as an eyesore to our people'was completed, being 20 ft. higher than planned and topped with a weather vane
1887 Dedication of building
1894 Steeple and entrance moved from center front to present location, ceiling lowered, hardwood floor and new pews installed
1916 Church raised 4 feet and basement added with fellowship room
1939 The first Christmas Eve candle light service held and continues to be held to this day
1971 Memorial windows - 'Cross & Flame' added
1978 All windows replaced in sanctuary dedicated 10/15/78, the 100th anniversary of the church building
7/25/2004 Celebration for the 125th anniversary of the church building held at Gile park
In recent years improvements have been made to the church to make it more energy efficient and handicap accessible

Lord Jesus, master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence. We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light. To you we say, "Come Lord Jesus!"
