Mount Washington Family Worship Center (Church of God of Prophecy) History

The Mt. Washington Family Worship Center, also known as the Church of God of Prophecy, began as a church in 1978. Led by Pastors Warren Headen and Andy Newsome, the church started by having meetings in members’ homes. Later, they would hold services on Sundays at Bullitt East High School and at the community room of the Meadow 11 Apartments for Wednesday Night services. As the congregation grew, it became necessary to for the members of the church to have a place to call their own.

So, on February 5, 1981, the church purchased a nearly 5-acre piece of land on Wales Run Rd., where the church is currently located. Bought for the sum $15,000, the church was able to secure utilities for the lot by June of that same year. Using the electricity now supplied by Salt River Electric, the church dedicated the grounds with a tent revival service, led by the late Alva Wilson. Members of the church came to the property for the groundbreaking ceremony, which included Rev. Ray Payne, then state overseer of the Church of God of Prophecy in Kentucky.

Construction of the church building took nearly four years to complete. The financing for the building is a testament of God’s provision for this community. According to Eugene Chesser, who has served as deacon of MWFWC, trying to secure a loan was not an easy task:

“We called on 40-45 banks to get a church loan, but no bank was interested. The reasons they told us was because churches posed a high risk, due to members being able to move away from church to church. Plus, many banks were unable to recover loan payments from churches.”

Eventually, they talked to Citizens Fidelity Bank and was able to secure a $35,000 loan, with some of the members, the trustees, and with help from the State Office to co-sign on the loan. With the loan secured, they met with John Estep of Stanton, KY, to discuss building plans and cost of construction. The estimated cost of the project was $38,000. The church sold the back acre of the lot for $3000, which the church used as down payment, and the loan was signed with Citizens Fidelity Bank on March 3, 1986.

When construction began on the new building three days later, the church realized they had no way to furnish the church inside. After praying about the situation, God gave them the idea to have members and friends supply a list of names of their friends, family, and contacts in order to send letters requesting donations for furniture. Within 3 months, by May of 1986, money came in amount of $7275, which paid for the cost, delivery, and installation of the furnishings inside the new building.

Something that was overlooked was the need for steel culverts to added so that people could cross over from Wales Run Rd onto the property. They talked with the Bullitt County Road Department, who informed the church that they were working at another site; they could not move equipment unless a heavy rain came and stopped their work. Less than one week later, there was a very heavy downpour, which stopped work at Road Department’s current location. The following Monday, the Road Department came and installed the 2 culverts at the church property, which allowed the delivery of the church furniture on May 29, 1986.

With the building completed and furniture installed, MWFWC held its first service in the new building on Sunday, June 22, 1986.

Still, provision was still needed to help pay off the above prime loan from Citizens Fidelity. So Gene and the church sent letters to the Houchens Foundation (now the E.G. Houchens Foundation, Inc.) of Bowling Green, KY, to secure an interest-free loan. After 2 years and 3-4 letters, Houchens sent the church a letter, asking the church to have a called business meeting and minutes to borrow money to pay off the balance owed within 10 years. The church agreed, and the loan was secured on April 28, 1988, as per requested by Houchens, to which the church paid off the Citizens Fidelity Loan. True to their word, the church paid off the loan within 10 years; they held a note-burning ceremony on September 13, 1998.

The church parsonage was built and completed on November 29, 1991.

As members have come and gone, God has still been watching out for MWFWC. He alone is our strength and shield, our refuge in times of trouble. In turn, we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of all He has given us.
