Greetings! I am so happy to be the pastor of Mountain View United Methodist Church- ‘Where Love Works!’
I am a Provisional Elder in the South Carolina United Methodist Annual Conference, and am working towards ordination. I earned my Master of Divinity at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. Most recently I pastored two United Methodist churches in Chester, SC. Prior to church appointment, I spent twenty years working and serving in peace and justice ministries.
At Mountain View we offer many opportunities for discipleship, leadership, outreach, music, and worship- for all ages. We have a forward focus and want everyone to feel included.
Also- Be on the lookout for our next fun family open to the community. You won’t want to miss out!

Mountain View United Methodist Church History
The history of Mountain View United Methodist Church
Roots for Mountain View were undoubtedly planted by Bishop Francis Asbury on one of his mission rides throughout northern Greenville County. Betts History of Methodism states that in 1803 Bishop Asbury spent the night with a local family and preached at the "Meeting House" on the following day. The 'Meeting House" was probably located within one half mile of the present Mountain View Church.
In 1892, the people of Mountain View first held services in a school building located between the present church and parsonage. There were twenty four charter members. During the first year, two acres of land were purchased for the price of ninety dollars, and a one-room wooden framed building was erected on the site of the present sanctuary. This building served the church until it was replaced in 1940 by the present brick structure. In 1942, a complete kitchen and fellowship hall were added in a new basement level structure of the church. A church parsonage was built in 1948 by members of the church who donated labor and materials. In 1962, an educational building was added to the existing structure. This building included a pastor's study, Sunday school rooms, a kitchen fellowship area, restrooms, and a choir loft.
The church's centennial was celebrated in 1992. This was a very exciting time for all the members and the community. The cornerstone of the present church was removed and a time capsule which had been placed there in 1940 was opened. Many of the members who had been involved in placing the capsule were there to see it reopened.
As the church grew, additional space was needed for worship, social events, and community outreach. In 2004, a new fellowship building was constructed and dedicated in 2005. This building included four additional Sunday school rooms; dinner seating for two hundred people; a modern, fully equipped kitchen; a stage with a projector and sound system; and larger restrooms.
Mountain View United Methodist Church has been able to extend its message through the ordained ministry of two members: the Reverend Donald S. Raton and the Reverend John Gerald Pickens. Fifty two pastors have served this congregation since its organization in 1892.
Looking back, we can see how God has worked through the years at Mountain View. We are thankful to say that God is still working today through our church ministry. We are truly grateful to the many lay people who have dedicated their service over the years. Without this rich heritage, much of the work would still be undone.
