New Salem Lutheran Church History
The New Salem Lutheran Church, 6646 E. State Route 540, is located just east of what was once a thriving rural agricultural village, New Jerusalem, and was founded in 1850 as a result of a prayer meeting at the local school house.
In 1851, the church purchased two acres of land for $15 and a church was constructed by the members using donated materials and labor.
A constitution was signed May 4, 1853, by the Rev. J.G. Shaefer, John Gable, John Hass, Daniel Arbegast, Jacob Wolf, Michael Unangst and Jacob Slonecker. These six and 48 others became the first membership.
In early years, women and girls sat on one side and men and boys on the other and collection baskets on long handles featured feathers on the end as a means to wake sleeping worshipers.
The first alter was built in 1945 and a basement was constructed west of the building in 1950. The church was then moved onto the basement. During that work, the sanctuary was extended and a porch and steps were added to the front of the building.
In 1961, Leroy Hostetler built a new alter and the pews were refinished. Two rooms were added upstairs and down in 1966 and in 1971, a well was drilled and restrooms were installed.
Most recently, the congregation was led by the Rev. Don Hare from 2008 until he retired in July 2013.
The church is linked in a charge with Philadelphia Lutheran Church, DeGraff, and currently is led by Ohio Lutheran Synod supply pastors for worship services beginning at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday.
