Leader Bio:
Pastor Mike Smith was born and raised in Fort Wayne, IN. He had been a meat cutter for 20 years before hearing God’s call to ministry. He has served three other churches and was a hospice chaplain for the last 12 years prior to coming to Norris Chapel. He was the chaplain for Fort Wayne Fire Depts. for three years. He is married to Linda and they have been married for 45 years. They have two daughters, Andria and Amber and both are married and live Indianapolis, IN.
His hobby is designing and building stained glass windows for over 30 years and works on glass projects almost every day. He has an identical twin brother, Mark which he and Pastor Mike are considered mirror twins as Mark is left-handed and Pastor Mike is right-handed. They attend the Twinsburg Twins Festival every year where over 2400 sets of twins from all over the world gather.
Both Linda and Pastor Mike are humbled and excited to be part of Norris Chapel. They both felt loved and welcomed. They would like to “Thank” Norris Chapel for their hospitality. As he is still getting his feet wet as he is gleaning as much information about Norris Chapel, committees, and congregation. His first impression of Norris Chapel is of a friendly, compassionate, spirit-filled and well-led church.
Pastor Mike has comes to Norris Chapel without an agenda and wants to be a part of its great legacy through his leadership and pastoral care.
He loves the Book of Joshua and especially Chapter One. Moses has just died and now God wants Joshua to lead the Israelites, but Joshua seems a little apprehensive about being the new leader. God says to Joshua in verse nine, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous”. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” This verse has given Pastor Mike great strength throughout his life as it lets him know God is near and will always be with him in all situations.
Pastor Mike hopes Norris Chapel will find strength in this Scripture as well. God will be leading us together into the future and He expects us to do so, being “Strong and Courageous”. God has never failed Pastor Mike, yet and he knows as Norris Chapel work together building His church and bring the lost to salvation, God will always be there with us.

Norris Chapel United Methodist Church History
Norris Chapel Church is named for the late Reverend H.J. Norris.
Reverend Norris was born in Smithville, Ohio on February 22, 1846, and died at his home in Winchester, Indiana, on February 14, 1916. He was raised in a devout Christian home during the American Civil War. Three of his brothers joined the military service, however, due to frail health, Reverend Norris was excluded from serving in the military as a soldier. Undaunted, he decided to join the Pioneer Corps, a group that helped to build roads, bridges, and fortifications.
Following his time with the Pioneer Corps, Reverend Norris went on to study public debate at the Normal School in Wooster, Ohio where he excelled. It was in Wooster, under the ministry of Rev. J.H. McConnell, that he decided to serve Christ in Ministry. From this time, he decided to work as a teacher and preacher until He entered the North Indiana Conference in 1873 and gave himself for thirty-nine years to the ministry of the Word of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Reverend Norris was married to Hattie Snyder, January 24, 1878. Together they had 2 children- a daughter Mrs. Edna Foust and son Dean Norris.
Building Through the Years
In 1880, the Norris Chapel Building was constructed, consisting of a one-room structure without belfry and altar.
In 1899 the belfry and alter were added.
In 1953, Ralph Allison donated land and the church building was moved northeast. It was placed on an eight-foot wall with a full basement. The complete cost of moving (labor, and material) was approximately $4,000. This additional basement space provided much-needed room for Sunday School Classrooms, a nursery, and a kitchen.
On May 11, 1961 The bell was taken down and later mounted on the church lawn, where it still sits to this day.
On June 15, 1987 a new wooden cross constructed by Loyal Norton was placed in the front of the Sanctuary replacing the white cross constructed by Leslie Brown.
On June 8, 1989 a new steeple for the church was installed
In 1991 Norris Chapel saw new growth through the addition of the Fellowship Hall and the 300 square foot expansion of the Sanctuary.
