Who we are
NLBCC welcomes you into the service of all that God is and calls you to be!
We choose to not list a set of doctrinal beliefs. Instead, we encourage you through thoughtful, informed, scholarship and modern day examples to connect your life to the Eternal One.
We are part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.
OUR VISION, to be a faithful, growing church that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and passion for justice (Micah 6:8);
OUR MISSION, to be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps "to the ends of the earth". (Acts 1:8)

Leader Bio:
I began my adult journey of faith in college when, after an awkward date, I realized I wanted to be held by a greater love. At that time I was still processing my parents’ divorce and had great doubts about God’s existence. I even questioned if love was real.
Thankfully, I had grown up in the United Church of Christ (UCC) where questions were encouraged. And, looking in the newspaper, (yep it was that long ago) I found a UCC church that was just starting up nearby. Reverend Fred Plummer showed love and concern for me from the very start. He always answered when I called. The small studies that arose from time to time linked me with people of an open and abiding faith who welcomed the questions of my heart and mind. And mission was central to this church’s identity.
After teaching high school math at Redlands High for 5 years, I decided it was time to follow the desire of my heart, to serve God with all of my life, mind, and time. I left everything behind to study at Yale Divinity School which is where I earned my Master’s of Divinity, the degree required to become a pastor of the churches I sought to serve.
I have served First Congregational Church of Las Vegas UCC, Lakewood Village Community Church in Long Beach, Corona del Mar Community Congregational Church UCC, and, for the past 8 years, North Long Beach Christian Church.
At North Long Beach Christian Church, I, along with the congregation, have created a safe space for all who enter our campus either electronically or in-person to find their way with God.
I love studying and preaching from the Bible, a miraculous set of books that tells of God’s heart for humanity–God’s desire for you.
I love Jesus who is Lord (meaning it is to him alone I bow), Savior (the one who takes away my sin), and Friend (the one who loves me just as I am).
I love my community, church members and friends. I enjoy working alongside my colleagues and city workers, community builders and non-profit leaders, CEOs and business owners, apartment dwellers, homeowners, those in subsidized housing and those who are unhoused. I’m a member of the Strengthening Families Group sponsored through DCFS, the Long Beach Minister’s Alliance, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and the United Church of Christ.
Everywhere I look, I find those who are faithfully working to build a better life for themselves and others, guided by faith, inspired by the Creator.
When I began my faith journey it was in a church that was one of the first to become truly welcoming to the gay community thirty years ago. At North Long Beach Christian Church, it is the other way around–I have been welcomed to pastor a congregation that has as part of its leadership team those who have openly and unabashedly loved Jesus even as they loved their long-time same-sex spouses.
The result is a community of people who don’t fit into standard categories but are held together by faith and love. NLBCC testifies daily to Jesus’ words in Mark 10:27. In responding to the disciples’ despondent query about how anyone could find their way into God’s Kingdom; Jesus answered, “For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.”

Help me to avoid every sin
Thanks to Thee, O God, that I have risen today, To the rising of this life itself; may it be to Thine own glory, O God of every gift, and to the glory, aid Thou my soul. With the aiding of Thine own mercy, even as I clothe my body with wool, cover Thou my soul with the shadow of Thy wing. Help me to avoid every sin, and the source of every sin to forsake, and as the mist scatters on the crest of the hills, may each ill haze clear from my soul, O God.
