North Shenango Presbyterian Church History
The church was officially organized February 19, 1849 and that year took in 54 members. During the life of our church this congregation has sent thirteen men into Gospel ministry. The first church building was erected in 1846. A newer, larger building was built in 1878. This newer structure was destroyed by a fire on Communion Sunday, January 6, 1918. The only things that were saved were the chairs and communion cups. While the new building was being erected, services were held in the first smaller church building which was at that time the North Shenango Music Hall. There was a Presbyterian Church Manse in Espyville Station but was sold in 1963.
The community and the church are very different today from what they were way back in 1849! Horses and buggies have given way to high speed automobiles. The frontier of today is the moon and beyond, not just the land on the other side of the Mississippi. Church services were less frequent and much longer back then. And people chanted the psalms instead of singing hymns, while musical accompaniment was unheard of. In 1849 church members often needed “tokens” in order to be admitted to the Lord’s Supper. But today, Communion is served frequently, and in a variety of ways. The table is open to all who feel led to partake. In 1849 the church stood at the center of the community.
