Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Church History

In 1914, Bishop McNally initiated plans to build a new church in the Bridgeland community. These plans were never carried out due to the start of the world war. In 1916, the school board took over a partially completed building at 2nd Ave. and 6th Street NE that had belonged to a German Protestant group which was stopped at the beginning of the War. Four classrooms were arranged on the ground floor and some years later, the upper floor was rented from the board and converted in to a Chapel, named St. Angela’s Bishop Kidd, having succeeded from Bishop McNally, lost little time in establishing the parish as soon as he had a priest to supply it.

On Sunday, September 13, 1925, he said Mass in St. Angela’s chapel and the following Sunday, Rev. N.R. Anderson said his first mass in the new parish. In the years that followed saw a sharp increase in the size of the classes at the school. The increase in children let to a greater attendance at St. Angela’s until the capacity of the chapel (225) was taxed. In 1928 Bishop Kidd saw that St. Angela’s was growing at such a rate that it should be offered to a religious community. He then invited the Redemptorist Fathers of the Toronto Province to accept the parish and in steps to prepare for their arrival, he arranged to purchase a large brick house at 610- 2nd Avenue NE for their residence.

In April, 1929, Rev. Isidore Shalla formally took charge of St. Angela’s as acting pastor. Immediately following this, he and Bishop Kidd began to arrange for a basement church to be constructed. This was completed and blessed on December 22. The name of the new church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, was changed from St. Angela’s at the request of the Redemptorist Fathers. In February of the following year, Rev. Edward Walsh became the first resident pastor.

Due to the difficult economic period of that time, the foundation stone for the church was not laid until 1954, and was blessed by Bishop Carroll on November 7, 1954, after the parish had increased in large numbers, Peter Thorton, an architect from Vancouver, was then commissioned to build a church of modern design and to build a church to accommodate 600 people. This new church was blessed on June 17, 1955, the Feast of the Sacred Heart in a church crowded with priests and laity. In the years that followed, a new rectory and parish hall to replace the basement hall and very old rectory used by the Redemptorists for many years

In 1996, Bishop Paul O’Byrne suggested a property swap. In exchange for all the properties the Chinese Catholics of Calgary had acquired on Edmonton Trail and 26th Avenue NE, they can take over the operation of Our Lady of Perpetual Help church on condition that the church be financial self sufficient. So on August1, 1996, the Chinese congregation official moved to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. On August 4, 1996, the first thanksgiving mass, under the direction of the Chinese Catholics of Calgary took place,

with the services of Rev. John Mak until April of 2005, Rev. Joseph Nguyen was assigned as pastor for Our Lady of Perpetual Help from August of 2005. By 2008, the parish services 500 Hundreds families of Chinese origin although the congregation still included parishioners from the original faith community and the local Bridgeland community. Our Lady of Perpetual Help continue to service a wide range of adult and children’s liturgy programmes, new comers from other countries, seniors, providing a place for parish activities, meetings and other faith activities. Our relationship with St Angela’s School is close, and we continue to reach out to the people beyond the Our Lady of Perpetual Help faith community.
