Our Lady of Guadalupe History
Parish Beginnings
Our Lady of Guadalupe parish was established in November of 1981 by Bishop Raymundo Pena of El Paso. At that time, Father Denis Tejada was appointed pastor and given the task of establishing a new Catholic community, especially for the Hispanic community of Hobbs, New Mexico. The first mass was celebrated in a former Methodist Church building on Texas Street on the first Sunday of Advent.
In the spring of 1982, the old Marian Hall (the first site of St. Helena’s Catholic Church) was demolished to clear the land and build a new parish building. In order to raise funds for this building, a group of parishioners suggested that the church organize a Family Fair. This was a great project as they had nothing to embark on this project. Under Father Tejada’s direction, preparations for this event began and they had great success. With these funds, construction on the present-day Parish Hall began in September of 1983. The building was constructed as a multi-purpose building that was and continues to be used for church services, religious education, and other parish functions. By January 1984, construction on this building was completed with the help of Lasco Construction and volunteers from the parish. To this day, the Family Fair remains as a yearly fundraising tradition at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish.
On April 17, 1994, a groundbreaking ceremony was with then Bishop Ricardo Ramirez was held to bless the site upon which the new church building would be constructed on. This new church building was dedicated and blessed by Bishop Ramirez on October 8, 1994.

Help my unbelief
Dear God, help my unbelief. When I'm in pain, I forget that you care about me. I forget that you have helped me through my trials. I forget that you hold me in your arms to keep me safe. I forget that you are feeling my pain with me. I forget that you love me, I forget that I am important to you. Show me your presence - let me feel your enveloping love. Heal my hurting soul. Thank you for staying with me even in my unbelief.
