Our Lady of the Angels History
History of Our Lady of the Angels' Parish
1905 Alberta became a Province in the Confederation of Canada. 1908 Our Lady of the Angels' parish began as a mission of the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, Lamoureux and was served by the Franciscan Fathers. 1909-10 Our Lady of the Angels' church was built and became a place of Catholic worship. 1950 After being served for 40 years by the Franciscans, Our Lady of the Angels' again became a mission parish of Lamoureux, the Archdiocese having taken over the parish from the Order. Fr. Roland Berube began tending the needs of both parishes as well as those of the Catholic inmates of the Provincial Gaol. 1958 The mission celebrated its Golden Anniversary. 50 years of service to the Catholic community. 1960 A Catholic Women's League council was formed in the parish. 1961 Fr. Malcolm Campbell was installed as the first resident pastor. 1963 Our Lady of the Angels' School opened. 1964 Fr. Karl Raab was appointed pastor. Fr. Leo Klug was appointed to the Provincial Gaol as its first full-time Catholic chaplain. 1965 Fr. Raab became both pastor and chaplain. Fr. Kenneth Dylke, in retirement, assisted with parish work. 1967 Fr. Richard Theroux came as assistant pastor and co-chaplain. September 22, 1967, Our Lady of the Angels' church was destroyed by fire. 1968 The present church was built and dedicated. 1969-71 Fr. Claude Prefontaine, assistant pastor. 1972 Knights of Columbus, Council 6363, was formed 1973 Fr. William Irwin was appointed pastor and chaplain. 1974-83 Fr. Gerard Maclnnis served 10 years as pastor and chaplain. 1975 Fr. Kenneth MacLellan, assistant pastor. 1976 Pope John XIII School opened. 1982-84 Fr. Jacques Hamel, assistant pastor. 1983-90 Fr. Leo Floyd spent 8 years as pastor and chaplain. 1983-92 Sr. Ada Toner was pastoral assistant for 10 years. 1984 John Paul II High School opened. 1987-91 Sr. Sheranne Johnston was Correctional Centre chaplain for 4 years. 1989-90 Fr. Michael LaPorte, assistant pastor. 1990 Fr. Duncan MacDonnell serves as pastor. 1992 Sr. Cecile Goyer serves as chaplain. 1993 Sr. Roseanne Favreau is pastoral assistant. 1999 Fr.
