Our Lady of the Rosary Church Peterlee Photos
Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Peterlee
Peterlee was designated as a New Town in 1948 and building work began in the early 1950s, with major development continuing into the 1980s. As people set up home in Peterlee, the needs of Catholics were provided by the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle establishing the Parish of Our Lady of the Rosary in 1954.
Initially, Holy Mass was celebrated in the Parish Priest’s house, as there was no Church. As the congregation increased, and was still without a Church, Holy Masses were celebrated by the Parish Priest, Father John Burns, in the Community Hall on Eden Lane. Locally, this was known as the White House.
The first and current Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was built in 1966. At the time, this modern design by David Brown of Newcastle upon Tyne presented a striking state of the art place of worship that was large, light and airy. Even today, over 50 years later, this building is considered to be one of the most stunning in Peterlee.

Our Lady Star of the Sea, Horden
The original Church building, which was of timber frame and timber wall construction, was built in 1921. It served the Parish well for nearly 60 years, which was much longer than originally expected.
The construction of the current Church was completed in 1980. The building has an octagonal layout, with glulam timber curved portal frames and brick internal and external walls. The design provides a large open internal space with no internal columns to obstruct view or layout. The Church foundation stone was cut in Ireland and blessed in Knock by Pope St John Paul II in September 1979. The completed Church was blessed and dedicated by Bishop Swindlehurst on 12 June 1980.
