Who we are
St. George's Church, Petty Harbour is the parish seat for the Parish of Petty Harbour, which comprises St. George's Church and Holy Trinity Church, Bay Bulls.
St. George's is the third church building to serve the Anglican people of Petty Harbour. The history of the church goes back to 1829 when the first incumbent was assigned, prior to that date, people went to St. John's for baptisms, marriages, etc. In the 1960's, St. Paul's in the Gould's was constructed and in 1972 the parish seat moved to St. Paul's, where a new rectory was built. In 1992, the parish split with St. Paul's going on it's own and the Parish of Petty Harbour reverting to it's original form. The church has always been an important part of the Town of Petty Harbour- Maddox Cove and is still today. While the congregation is not a large one, it is a dedicated one.
The first Anglican Church in Bay Bulls was a small wooden structure built in Gunridge in 1864 and was ministered to by the resident priest in Petty Harbour.
In May 1964, Holy Trinity Church celebrated its 100th anniversary, but the time had come to start thinking of a new church, the old one being in a state of disrepair. In April 1969, work commenced on the present church on land bought from a parishioner for $1. The first Eucharist was celebrated in the new church on January 25th, 1970 and was consecrated by the Rt. Rev. Seaborn on May 25, 1970.
Holy Trinity is a small church with a strong and dedicated congregation.
In 1956 under the leadership of the Rev. W .F. Ralph plans were put in place to combine the two congregations of Presentation and St. Matthew's. After several years of great discussion and much hard work breaking of the ground ceremony took place on Whitsunday, May 21, 1961. In the previous year the name St. Christopher was chosen as the name for the new church and a sign was erected on the property. However, at a meeting on October 15, 1962, the Rector, The Rev Canon G. Martin informed the congregation that St. Christopher could not be used as the name was not on the official calender of churches. A lengthy discussion occurred and the name St. Paul was chosen.
On October 28, 1962, on the feast of St. Simon and St. Jude the corner stone for St. Paul's was laid by the Rt. Rev. J. A. Meaden. The church was officially opened and dedicated on December 8, 1963. After many years of hard work and much determination St. Paul's was consecrated on October 22, 1978 by the Rt. Rev. R. L. Seaborn.
The congregation was a part of the Parish of Petty Harbour until June 1990, when they took on the responsibility of a self supporting parish. Today, the church of St. Paul's Gould/Kilbride, is ministering to a diverse congregation in a growing area of St. John's. Our services are both traditional and contemporary.

Abide with us
O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Be with us in our silence and in our speech, in our haste and in our leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening; and give us grace at all times humbly to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.
