Parish of St. Michael & All Angels History
The congregation of St. Michael and All Angels had its beginning on January 5, 1948. On that day, the Chapel of the Epiphany, in the Leggo Memorial School, was dedicated. The Leggo Memorial School was located in the area of 200-202 Country Road. The congregation was then sponsored and financially supported by St. John the Evangelist Church. This was part of the program of expansion, which saw the one parish become three separate parishes. Without mentioning any family names, for fear of omission, we must salute and recognize the families that attended the Epiphany Chapel and were pioneers of our congregation.
The congregation grew quickly and in 1957 the cornerstone for the first St. Michael & All Angels Church was laid. It had a seating capacity of 400. The first service was held at Christmas, 1958. The congregation continued to operate as a mission of St. John the Evangelist Church, supported and overseen by them for thirty three years. The congregation continued to expand and progress to the point where the congregation felt comfortable that they could be self supporting and form their own parish. After negotiations with their sponsoring Church, they finally became an independent parish on May 3, 1981.
Disaster struck on May 24, 1983 when our Church was destroyed by fire. The short period of doom and gloom soon turned into a time of renewal and rejuvenation for the congregation. Funds to rebuild came from parishioners, other Anglican Churches and their parishioners, and Churches of other denominations and their members. This was a remarkable, generous, and ecumenical achievement. The new Church building was opened and dedicated in September, 1984. The building was declared "debt free" one year later and on September 29, 1985 the festival of St Michael and All Angels, it was consecrated. The congregation has been a beehive of activity ever since.
