Powder Springs Missionary Baptist Church History
Powder Springs Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1821 in a one-room log building. It was used as both a church and a school. It was placed on a track of land owned by Calvin Hickle beside the soon-to-be-built Southern Railway.
Church members decided the church could not remain at its original location in 1885 because parishioners would ride their horses, wagons and buggies to worship at the church, and when trains would pass through the area, they would scare the horses, causing them to run off in the middle of the service. The church was rebuilt a quarter of a mile from the old location on a hill. It was built of weather board and painted white, earning it the name “the white church on the hill.”
The new church, which is the current building where the members of Powder Springs Missionary Baptist Church worship, was built in 1961 for $17,221.79 after a secret ballot to repair the old church or build a new church was held. The money was collected from donations, $2,000 was borrowed from longstanding member Lettie Needham and $5,000 was borrowed from Citizens Bank and Trust Co. of Grainger County in Rutledge. The first service in the new sanctuary was held September 9, 1962 with a message to “finish the work” delivered by Rev. J. L. Qualls. The church was paid for in full January 1967 and was celebrated with a note-burning.

Abide with us
O Holy Spirit of God, abide with us; inspire all our thoughts; pervade our imaginations; suggest all our decisions; order all our doings. Be with us in our silence and in our speech, in our haste and in our leisure, in company and in solitude, in the freshness of the morning and in the weariness of the evening; and give us grace at all times humbly to rejoice in Thy mysterious companionship.
