Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ History
The Provo Congregational Church was founded February 5, 1891. Eleven persons adopted a covenant and creed and elected officers. The first public services were held the following Sunday.
In December 1892 a corner lot at Third North and University Avenue was purchased for $1000.00. A frame building was erected and the first church was dedicated April 29, 1894. This building served the Congregationalists until 1923 when the Congregationalists, Methodists, and Baptists united to become the Provo Community Congregational Church.
Vision 2021
For our congregation’s 120th birthday we wanted to give ourselves an even better focus on mission and ministry. The church council has worked on a vision that shall guide us through the next decade. Vision 2021 was ratified by the annual meeting on January 16th 2011:
God is still speaking:
Celebrating our 120 years of community service, we as members of Provo Community Congregational United Church of Christ have a vision of our community that shall guide us over the next ten years. As the population of Utah Valley grows, so does our congregation. Diversity is coming to town and we are here to embrace it. God is still speaking in Utah Valley,
Spiritual Growth:
We welcome all who seek spiritual growth in Jesus Christ, including persons of every age, gender, race, national origin, faith background, marital status, family structure, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, mental and physical ability, economic and social status, and educational background, to participate in the life and mission of this family of God’s people, sharing in the worship of God and enlisting in the work of this local church as it serves this community and the world.
Congregational Growth:
Our worship services shall help us be a congregation truly in touch with God’s love and showing that love. Our outreach activities shall create a strong and vital congregation. In 2021 our congregation shall be financially sustainable and able to improve our house of worship as needed. As the downtown area of Provo changes we will change to meet the needs of the many who will be drawn to a congregation with the appeal of being the “other choice”.
Historic bits and bytes:
The Rev. Charles McCoard writes about “A Community Church in a Utah Town” (1922) The Rev. Philip King writes about “Thirty Years in Mormondom” (1914) A Teacher writes about “Procter Academy, Provo, Utah” (1909) The Church Review reviews “The Congregational Church of Provo” (1895)
