Who we are

As I start my ministry in our Parish, I would like to enjoin you all to pray with me to seek guidance from God, St. Dominic and Our Lady of the Assumption our Patron Saints, as we continue to build His Kingdom of Love, Peace, and Justice. This year is the Jubilee Year of Mercy and it is fitting that we ask God’s Mercy and Forgiveness for whatever hinder us in promoting His Kingdom.

Change is something that we often dread. But it is inevitable if we want to improve and make progress. Only when we are open to it guided by the Spirit that we will under-stand where God is leading us to.

The saying goes: “We do not join a community, we build it,” let us work together then and always mindful that we all work for the greater glory of God. I believe that the king-dom of God is about relationships. And so unless we are connected to God and are in a good relationship with each other nothing can be accomplished.

Please be more involved in church. This is your parish – our parish. Let us feel that we all belong to this parish. Let us all be reminded of our stewardship. Let us learn to share.

It is said that we can never change the world by going to church but by being “The Church”. Bless you all!!!

Fr. Nong

Saint Dominic Parish History

During the early part of the 20th century, a number of French Canadian colonists, having established themselves in the immediate environs of Cold Lake, requested the visit of a priest for their spiritual well-being. Father Emile Fabre was assigned to visit them regularly in 1912 from the mission of St. Raphael in LeGoff (Cold Lake First Nation), where he resided. In July, 1914, Father Jules Le Chevalier took over the posting. The following year, he constructed a wooden residence, 20 feet square on the land given by Mr. Soucy, on the spot of the actual Church. On August 5, he asked Bishop Legal to place the new mission under the protection of Our Lady of the Snows. The Bishop told him to turn the page of his Divine Office and to name St. Dominic as titular of the new mission. From that time on, this new Canadian colony received the name of St. Dominic in Cold Lake. St. Dominic Parish was established by Bishop Emile Legal of Edmonton on June 1, 1915. On December 8 Father Delabre became the first pastor of this church.

The power of Christian prayer Grant me, O Lord...
Grant me, O Lord, to know what I ought to know,to love what I ought to love, to praise what delights Thee most, to value what is precious in Thy sight, to hate what is offensive to Thee. Do not suffer me to judge according to the sight of my eyes, nor to pass sentence according to the hearing of the ears of ignorant men; but to discern with a true judgment between things visible and spiritual, and above all, always to inquire what is the good pleasure of Thy will.
