Saint Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church History
St Herman of Alaska Orthodox Sobor is a parish in the Archdiocese of Canada of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA).
By God’s grace, under the zealous leadership of Fr Yaroslav Roman a small group of faithful initiated St Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church in 1977. For 6 months the faithful worshipped in a home until property was purchased on Ellerslie Rd in southeast Edmonton. A chapel was fashioned in the garage where we worshipped until 1982.
Later property was purchased at 10320 147 St and converted into a Church. The parish increased in size and ministry during this time under the leadership of Fr Stephen Keaschuk. In 1997 a new temple was built at 9930 - 167 St in Edmonton’s west end.
In December of 1999, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Theodosius and His Grace Bishop Seraphim concecrated the temple and the altar. In December of 2002, by Decree of the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church in America, St Herman of Alaska Church was elevated to the status of Sobor. During this year of 2002, the Sobor of St. Herman celebrated its 25th Anniversary with events happening in both August and December on the feast days of St. Herman. Our projects have been to produce a recording of the Divine Liturgy and a History of the Parish booklet.
Communication
A weekly bulletin is published and emailed. Parish Council minutes are posted on the bulletin board. A web page was established in 1999 to utilize this new mode of communication: http://sthermans.ca
Today By the grace of God, the parish continues to grow in numbers, from a cross-section of social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
St Herman of Alaska Orthodox Sobor parish strives to be faithful to the Holy Traditions of the Orthodox Church. The people have brought a multitude of talents which are being shared in the parish for the mutual upbuilding of all. Together we grasp the injunction of our Patron, the Holy Elder St Herman, “From this day forth, from this hour, from this minute, let us love God above all and do His holy will.”

I want to know Thee
Father, I want to know Thee, but my coward heart fears to give up its toys. I cannot part with them without inward bleeding, and I do not try to hide from Thee the terror of the parting. I come trembling, but I do come. Please root from my heart all those things which I have cherished so long and which have become a very part of my living self, so that Thou mayest enter and dwell there without a rival. Then shalt Thou make the place of Thy feet glorious. Then shall my heart have no need of the sun to shine in it, for Thyself wilt be the light of it, and there shall be no night there. In Jesus Name, Amen.
