Who we are
St. John’s United Church of Christ has a long history, including the origins of the church in Eagle Valley near Fountain City, WI. St. John’s Church entered a shared covenant in 2021 with Hope UCC, and Pastor Deb Kunkel serves both churches. In 1870 the Swiss and German pioneers in Eagle Valley organized Emmanuel Evangelical and Reformed church. The congregation initially met in homes. In the late 1870’s while raising funds to build a church, worship services were held in the nearby Eagle Valley Public school.
The first church was built and dedicated in 1892, located about 7 miles from Fountain City. A tornado in 1903 destroyed the wood frame church, and two years later was rebuilt using brick construction. Worship in Eagle Valley continued until 1949 when the dwindling congregation joined with St. John’s in Fountain City. St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed congregation was organized in 1886 in Fountain City, and the church was built the following year. The same pastor served both Eagle Valley and St. John’s. After the Eagle Valley congregation joined St. John’s in 1949, the growing membership and attendance resulted in building a new church in Fountain City in 1952.
An educational wing was added to the church in 1968. Major remodeling of the sanctuary and a lift added for accessibility was completed in 1997. The Church in Eagle Valley was historically preserved and donated to St. John’s in 2003. Friends of Eagle Valley Community Church, an independent ecumenical committee, manages its use and maintains the restoration. As it is now named, this Community Church is available for any church to use for worship services, memorials, or weddings. In 2011 a pavilion with tables was added on the church grounds to accommodate gatherings of church or family.

Leader Bio:
Pastor Deb (the Rev. Dr. Deb Kunkel) comes to us from Florida but is well acquainted with Wisconsin. She is a second career minister, previously working as a real estate paralegal. She was born in Danvers, MA, and met her husband Greg there. They lived in Massachusetts until she attended Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine.
There she served as a licensed pastor first for a church in Thorndike, then Ellsworth Falls. She was ordained in October of 2002, then headed to Wisconsin where she served as the Associate Pastor at St. Stephens UCC in Merrill and as pastor at Pittsville UCC. While in Pittsville, she was a volunteer firefighter and EMT 1.
In 2011 she was called to be the Associate Pastor of Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ in Sanibel, FL. While there she earned a Doctor in Ministry In Family, Youth, and Culture from the School of Theology of Fuller Theological Seminary. She served there until October 2021. She joined us on January 1 for the shared Ministry between Hope UCC and St. Johns UCC. Pastor Deb and Greg do not have any children of their own but have had a variety of feathered and furry companions over the years.
Currently their chihuahua-beagle Lulu is adjusting to the snow and cold of Wisconsin winters. 'I am looking forward to working with the two churches as we establish this new shared ministry,' shared Pastor Deb, 'as well as renewing some friendships from the last time we lived in Wisconsin. As I serve the congregation I know that God has in store for us graces beyond our imagination when we pause, look, and take time to recognize them.'

C-FC Area Food Shelf - Helping The Local Community
The Cochrane-Fountain City Area Food Shelf of St. John's Church believes that having 3 meals a day is a human right, no matter their circumstances. Unfortunately too many in our area experience periods where food insecurity is part of their daily life. When this happens, we want to help. We serve all residents of Buffalo County. (Your statement of) residency in this area is our only requirement to receive assistance.
We are located at 303 South Hill Street in Fountain City, at St. John’s Church. There are no religious requirements to use our pantry; our faith tells us that Jesus didn’t turn away people, so we don’t either. We are also handicapped accessible. All who are currently needing assistance are welcome. Residents can come twice a month. If you have a food emergency between those times, or would like to donate to our pantry, please call church and leave a message at 608.687.3277. The C-FC Area Food Shelf will not be open on holidays.

Saint John's UCC History
In 1957 St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church became St. John’s United Church of Christ as a result of a merger. The denominations of the Congregational Christian Church, along with Evangelical and Reformed Church joined to form United Church of Christ. UCC is a distinct and diverse community of Christians that came together as one church. They joined faith and actions and currently are over 5,000 churches with nearly one million members across the U.S. The UCC serves God in the co-creation of a just and sustainable world. The UCC is a church of "firsts," a church of extravagant welcome, and a church where "…they may all be one".
