Who we are
St. Mark’s is…
A home for sinners. A place for the wounded. A light in the darkness. A refuge for the weary.
The people of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church are, by the grace of God, members of the Christian Church, saved through faith in Christ Jesus. We are gathered around the saving gifts of His Holy Word and Sacraments (Baptism and Communion). The center of our life together is the Divine Service (worship), where these gifts are freely given.
In each service we are brought into the presence of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. By hearing and receiving His Word, we are assured that by His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, we are forgiven of our sins and given everlasting life in His name. We joyfully cling to the teachings of the inspired and inerrant Word of God (the Holy Bible), and confess Martin Luther’s Small Catechism, the Augsburg Confession, and the entire Book of Concord of 1580 to be the correct interpretation and presentation of biblical doctrine.
In other words… we believe, teach, and confess that salvation is in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, on the basis of Scripture alone.

Dress Code
We don’t have a dress code at St. Mark’s. Some of our parishioners, as an expression of their reverence for God’s presence, prefer to dress more formally; others, intending no irreverence, prefer to dress casually. Wear what feels comfortable!

Saint Mark Lutheran Church History
St. Mark’s is the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod’s mother church in the northern region of California (from Sonoma County to the Oregon border). The first Missouri Synod missionary arrived in Ferndale in 1893 in response to the request of Old Trinity Lutherans who had relocated from St. Louis, MO. The congregation was officially organized on April 26, 1906, making it one of the Missouri Synod’s oldest parishes in California.
