Who we are
St Matthew’s Church is a small church with a big heart. We care about one another and about our neighbourhood. We want to do all we can to support each other and make a difference locally. Worship and prayer are at the heart of our community life. We seek encouragement and challenge from the Bible, and inspiration and empowering by God’s Spirit. We pray regularly for the world, our parish, and each other. At the centre of our worship is Holy Communion (also known as the Eucharist). When we share bread and wine we remind ourselves that Jesus is at the centre of our community, and we enact our unity with one another and union with God.
St Matthew’s is a Church of England church. This means that we are part of a group of churches across the globe called the Anglican Communion. In some ways our worship is traditional and in other ways it is contemporary. We value the riches of tradition and the way symbolic actions can tell stories and be full of meaning. We also value the new things of the wider church, like those modern songs or technology which helps us to engage with God in our worship.
St Matthew’s is the sister church of St Thomas’ church, Stamford Hill. Fr William Campbell-Taylor, the vicar at St Thomas’, is Priest-in-charge of St Matthew’s Church. St Matthew’s is also part of a group of churches which includes St Michael and All Angels, Stoke Newington.
All are very welcome at St Matthew’s, whether or not you are familiar with faith and however holy or religious you feel you are. We hope you will feel comfortable when you visit – we won’t cling to you or crowd you but instead will enable you to simply be present among us. St Matthew’s is your church.
