Sherbrooke Heights Alliance Church History
Our Rich Heritage:
Bethany Tabernacle was the first Alliance Church built in Peterborough. The building was erected in 1898, under the leadership of Dr. Zimmerman. Located on George Street North, the building was the home of the Alliance Church for fifty years.
A new era opened up for the Alliance testimony in Peterborough, when on October 16th the new Park Street Alliance church was dedicated to the worship and service of God. Situated on a corner lot, the new church was constructed at low cost due to many hours of volunteer labour contributed by members of the congregation
Evangelistic Campaign
Following the opening day the church launched a two-week evangelistic campaign. Individuals professed salvation and Christians were drawn closer to the Lord. Nine young people took the step of obedience in the waters of Baptism. When the facilities at Park Street were sold, the church went through a time of transition. During this time, the congregation met at Crestwood Secondary School for Sunday Services, Bible Study and Children’s Club.
Immanuel Alliance Church
During the early 1980s, under the leadership of Reverend Reid Cook, the committed congregation developed the seven and a half acre lot that the church purchased. Following a ground turning service in which the land was dedicated to God, a building was erected. The new home of the Alliance Church in Peterborough would be called Immanuel Alliance Church.
Sherbrooke Heights Alliance Church
In September 2012, Immanuel Alliance Church became Sherbrooke Heights Alliance Church. A Church, that is dedicated to not just being “in” the community but a Church that is “of” and “for” the community of Sherbrooke Heights. Under the leadership of Reverend Mark Bebbington, Sherbrooke Heights Alliance is heading towards an exciting future where the vision of these dedicated individuals is to Know God and Make God Known to our community, our city, our province, our country, and right around the world.
History of C & MA in Peterborough: http://www.cmacan.org
In the year 1889, Reverend AB Simpson (Founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance) together with other speakers came to Peterborough and held a Christian Alliance convention. He taught the doctrine of Jesus Christ as Saviour, Sanctifier, Healer and Coming King. The convention resulted in a number of Christians joining the Christian Alliance with JC Turnbull as president.
As the attendance and interest grew it was necessary to organize a regular local church group with pastor and officers. In 1893 the first pastor RJ Zimmerman was called. There were thirteen charter members that year.
The work prospered under Zimmerman and in 1898 Bethany Tabernacle was erected on George Street. The name Bethany was chosen because it means place of fellowship. At the time, the only other Alliance Church in Canada was Bethany Church in Toronto which today is First Alliance Church.

Visit, I beseech thee, O Lord, this habitation with thy mercy, and me with thy grace and salvation. Let thy holy angels pitch their tents round about and dwell here, that no illusion of the night may abuse me, the spirits of darkness may not come near to hurt me, no evil or sad accident oppress me; and let the eternal Spirit of the Father dwell in my soul and body, filling every corner of my heart with light and grace. Let no deed of darkness overtake me; and let thy blessing, most blessed God, be upon me for ever, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
