St Andrew's Union Church History
The first European church in the Wairarapa Valley, the Wesleyan Church was opened on this site in 1865. Fourteen years later it was moved to the rear of the section to allow the construction of the present church, then known as the New Methodist Church, which was opened in 1880.
The old church was moved to Cobblestones Museum where it was fully restored. It is still used for weddings and community events. In 1971 the Greytown Methodist and Greytown Presbyterian Churches combined to form Saint Andrews Union Church. The old Presbyterian Church building in West Street was demolished.
In 2012, after several years of planning, the church was strengthened, refurbished, upgraded and extended. The church now provides both a flexible worship centre and facilities available for use by community groups, thus enabling it to become a focal point of the community, just as it was when it was first built in 1880.
