St. Andrew's United Church History
The cornerstone of the new church was laid for the New Richmond Pastoral Charge on St. Andrew’s Day, (November 30th) 1839, hence the name, “St. Andrew’s”. Prior to church union in the United Church of Canada in 1925, New Richmond was a Presbyterian pastoral charge originating from the Church of Scotland which began ministry in the region in 1831. In 1877 the church joined Miramichi Presbytery. Although we are now only one, we were once a charge with four churches:
New Richmond Church 1839-present Grand Cascapedia Church 1899-2018 Black Cape Church 1831-1963 Caplan Chapel 1962-1970
The charge proudly celebrates our local sons, George and Leslie Pigeon. Rev. George Pigeon served as the first Moderator of the United Church of Canada. He and his brother, Leslie, were instrumental in negotiating the terms of unification for the Presbyterian, Methodist, and Congregational churches in Canada in 1925. We are very proud of our place in the history of the United Church.
