St. Cecilia RC Church History
In 1904, Fr. J. Lestanc, OMI, began visiting the Coughlin Ranch on a monthly basis to celebrate Mass with Catholics living in the Nanton area. By 1906, Fr. D. DuBois, OMI, was holding services at the Nanton Hotel and, together with his congregation, laying plans to erect a formal church. Generous financial donations and volunteer labourers working under the direction of local resident Frank DuRochur brought the plans to rapid fruition. Bishop Legal blessed St. Cecilia's Church on June 3, 1907.
Nanton's parish status and affiliation changed frequently through the years. Initially an Okotoks mission, it was served by Granum from 1917 to 1933. It became a resident parish in 1933, serving a mission at Stavely for the next several years. In 1941, however, St. Cecilia was attached to Claresholm.
Despite these administrative shifts, the original Church of St. Cecilia changed little from 1907 until the 1980s. In 1982, a bequest from Mrs. Zatko to the Nanton Catholic Women's League, augmented by money from CWL fund-raising actiivities, enabled parishioners to erect a parish hall. Two years later, they expanded the hall and refurbished the church interior. After Ivanelle Johnson nee Ebbert left another generous gift to the CWL in 1991, the congregation purchased both an organ and a baptismal font.
By the mid-1990s, St. Cecilia's Parish Committee was participating actively in the Pastoral Council at Christ the King. Through bazaar sales, members of Nanton's Catholic Women's League continued to provide both the parish and the underprivileged in developing countries with financial support.
