Who we are
Our church family gathers for worship and fellowship at 11:30am (Central Time) on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of every month. Our services follow Rite II of the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer, and use contemporary language. You can expect readings from the Holy Scriptures; preaching centered on the good news of redemption in Christ; hymns and prayers; and a celebration of Holy Communion, in which we remember Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. After the service, all are invited to stay for light refreshments and conversation.
St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church is conveniently located just off Route 1806, near the marked turn-off into the community of Wakpala. Positioned on top of a hill that overlooks Lake Oahe, the church is easily visible from the surrounding area. You can also find St. Elizabeth’s on Google Maps.

Ordained to the diaconate on June 19, 2010, and then to the priesthood on December 18, 2010, Kim has served as the superintending presbyter on the Episcopal Church’s Standing Rock Mission since May 2015. Prior to that, he served as a priest in Lower Brule.
He is active in the life and work of the Episcopal Church both nationally and in the Diocese of South Dakota. On three occasions, he has been a delegate to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church; from 2015—2018, he was a member of the House of Deputies’ Committee on the State of the Church. He has acted as treasurer for the Niobrara Council since 2006; has been a member of the Diocesan Council for the Episcopal Diocese of South Dakota since 2011; and, from 2007—2010, was on the Diocesan Standing Committee.
Born and raised in South Dakota, Kim has lived on an Episcopal mission for most of his life. For five years, he was a law enforcement officer: first in Wellmont, SD (where he was the youngest chief of police in the state); then in Belle Fourche; and, finally, in Sisseton. He currently resides in Wakpala with his wife, Tammy.

St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church History
Almost all of the people of Standing Rock Episcopal Mission are Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux. Almost a hundred and fifty years ago Chief Gall invited the Episcopal Church onto Standing Rock, after much prayer at what is now the site of St. Elizabeth’s in Wakpala. He is buried in St. Elizabeth’s cemetery. St. Elizabeth’s is the mother church of the Mission, and was the home of St. Elizabeth’s School for over fifty years. There are six Episcopal churches on the South Dakota side of Standing Rock: St. Elizabeth’s, Wakpala; St. Peter’s, McLaughlin; St. Paul’s, Little Eagle; Good Shepherd, Little Oak Creek; St. John’s, Bull Head; and Holy Spirit, Firesteel Creek. Each of these is served by a layreader and administrator. Each church says Morning Prayer on those Sundays when a priest cannot celebrate Holy Eucharist. The reservations of South Dakota are among the poorest areas in the U.S., accounting for seven of the ten poorest counties in the country. Diabetes, alcoholism, drug abuse and cancer are epidemic. Recently we suffered an epidemic of suicides affecting five of our six churches. And yet our people are exceptionally generous and compassionate. They are devout and prayerful. They are exceptionally humorous and it is an honour for this priest to be unmercifully teased by them.
