The Carmelite Order
Saint John of the Cross Parish has been entrusted by the Archdiocese of Toronto to the Carmelite Order. Having begun as a group of Hermits in the Holy Land at the time of the Second Crusade, the Carmelites migrated to Europe in the thirteenth century from their place of origin on Mount Carmel. The Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, as they are officially known, became a mendicant order, serving the needs of the growing cities of Europe.
By the fifteenth century, the Carmelites had founded groups of contemplative sisters who shared the spirituality of the Carmelites. In fact, the Carmelites have become known in the Church for their spiritual tradition, helping people grow in a relationship with God and with each other.
The Carmelite Order has given the Church outstanding examples of holiness and service over the centuries. Blessed Titus Brandsma and Saint Edith Stein are only the most recent of a long list of Carmelites recognized by the Church as leaders in the Carmelite Spiritual Tradition.
Saint John of the Cross, the patron of our parish, was a Carmelite Friar who spent his life calling people to a deeper relationship with God and with each other. He lived in Spain in the fifteen hundreds and was one of the leaders of a reform movement within the Carmelite tradition. His ministry of Spiritual direction, both in person and in his writings, have become normative in the Catholic Church to judge the validity of extraordinary holiness and profound prayer experiences.
Today, the Carmelites serve in many nations of the world. From Brazil to Zaire, Carmelite Brothers and Priests serve in parishes and other institutions to bring people closer to each other and to God. This ministry can include anything from a sacramental ministry to building water systems, from preaching and teaching to showing country folks how to raise pigs.
The Carmelite Order stresses the prayer life and the community aspects of Saint John of the Cross Parish. The Carmelites who serve here are concerned to make our Community a “living flame of love” in the Heart of Meadowvale.

St. John of the Cross Parish History
In the later 1970's, the Markvale Corporation began the planning for a development in the far West reaches of the Archdiocese of Toronto. The building of houses began in 1977 and slowly, but surely, Meadowvale began to take shape. In the beginning, Fr. Law, the Pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Streetsville, offered a Sunday Eucharist for Meadowvale Catholics in the Library of St. Richard's School. Soon, the Library was too small; then Mass was offered in the Gymnasium of the School.
On April 15, 1978, Archbishop Philip Pocock formally opened the new Meadowvale Parish. He entrusted the Community to the leadership of the Carmelite Fathers and particularly to Fr. Philip Nessinger, O. Carm., the first Pastor. In the twenty years since the formation of the Parish, various Carmelites, Religious women, Deacons and Lay Pastoral Associates have served on the Parish Staff. Fr. Robert Primozic was the first of the Carmelite Assoicate pastors in the Parish, followed by Armand Mayville, Terrence Cyr, Emmett Gavin, Dennis Graviss, Mark Schaffner, Felix Prior, Robert Boley, Leonard Gilman and Joyson Pottackal. Fr. Marcel Dubé became the second Pastor of the parish in June, 1987. Fr. Leo succeeded him as pastor in June 1999. Sisters Marie MacNamara, C.S.J., Sr. Mary Mallany, I.B.V.M. and Sr. Jacqueline de Verteuil, C.S.J., also served on the Parish Team at different times. From 1989 to June 2008 Mrs. Julie Flynn served as a pastoral associate. From 1992 to 2016 Mrs. Kate Watkiss servered as a pastoral associate. Sister Ria T. Angostura, MSCS, joined the parish as Pastoral Associate as September 1st, 2016.
Saint John of the Cross has been a Parish marked by growth from its beginning. The Parish now has over 4,500 families listed on the Parish rolls.
On February 20, 1982, ground was broken for the new Church. The building was finished and the dedication was held on Sunday, December 12, 1982. Many of the original parishioners from the days of the liturgies in the gym of St. Richard's School were in attendance to witness Cardinal Emmett Carter bless the new Church. On June 8, 1996, St. John of the Cross Parish was cut off at its Southern boundary on Britannia Road and the new Merciful Redeemer Parish was established to serve the new Community of Erin Mills.
From a small Parish within a new area of Mississauga, St. John of the Cross has grown into a prophetic, priestly Community serving the people of Meadowvale. Spiritual and material help is offered by many parishioners who serve the needs of their sisters and brothers. The Parish of Saint John of the Cross reaches out in worship, service and care to the world with a faith and hope founded on a history of personal and communal spiritual growth. The Lord is with us.

Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart which no unworthy thought can drag downwards; an unconquered heart which no tribulation can wear out; an upright heart which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow upon me also, O Lord my God, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, and a faithfulness that may finally embrace you; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
