Who we are
Welcome to St John’s. We, at St John’s, strive to be a welcoming inclusive group who, as followers of Jesus Christ, believe that God commanded us to love our neighbours as ourselves.
We came together initially some 35 years ago when two small congregations of Anglicans and Presbyterians agreed to join together and to build a single larger church. A number of local Methodists also shared our vision for a united church presence in the community and joined us.
As a Cooperating Venture we are privileged to be able to draw on the traditions of three denominations and to contribute to each denomination’s life and work in the community.
All are welcome at St John’s, you do not have to be an Anglican, Presbyterian or Methodist or for that matter any other Christian denomination. If you just want to explore what Jesus left for us in the world, that is fine with us.
Sundays.
We come together as a family every Sunday at 9:30am for worship, teaching and fellowship. On the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday of the month we celebrate communion.
On the second Sunday of the month a group of families and individuals meet at 5pm – 2gether@5 – to share a meal, worship and explore the scriptures together and be involved in some craft activities. On the 4th Sunday young adults come together at 6pm for worship, teaching, discussion and supper.
Most years we run a 16 week Alpha course for those wishing to explore the basic beliefs of the Christian faith. This group meets in the church for a meal before the teaching and discussion time.
A service is held at 11am each Thursday for the residents of the Buckland’s Beach Rest Home.
We support the All Saints Howick Food Bank. Please put contributions into the basket in the lobby.
Children and Youth.
Each Friday night during the school term Youth@StJohns, for intermediate and older youth, meets for games, teaching and “hanging out”.
St John’s has a very active “Mainly Music@St Johns” group for children under 5 and their care givers. They meet in the church on Wednesday mornings during the school term.
During school holidays St John's offers a week long “Holiday Programme” for children aged 5 to 12. This activity is organised and run by a number of young adults and teenagers.
During the Sunday worship service we offer separate activities for pre-school and primary/intermediate age children and they then join us in our closing worship.
Social Events. As a family we like to come together regularly to enjoy each other’s company; tea and coffee are served after the Sunday morning service. In addition we have a number of social events.
Parish has Weekday Activities and our community hall and church complex is used by a number of local groups.
Leadership and Governance.
As a Cooperating Parish we draw on our partner denominations for clergy. Following Anglican tradition we have a People’s Warden and two Synod Representatives; there is also a Session Clark and a Presbytery Representative reflecting our Presbyterian heritage.
We are part of the Uniting Congregations of Aotearoa New Zealand (UCANZ), an umbrella body for all NZ cooperating ventures. The overall Leadership of the church is the responsibility of the Leadership Team which comprise the Minister/Staff, Peoples Warden, Synod Rep's, Session Clerk, Presbytery Rep and 6 Congregational elected members.

Teach us to serve Thee
Teach us, good Lord, to serve Thee more faithfully; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labour and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do Thy will, O Lord our God.
