Who we are
St. John's is a vibrant community of folks who gather on Sundays and throughout the week to carry out our mission and ministry in the city of New Rochelle and beyond.
Once purely a "local" church known as "the little church on the hill," our members now also travel from as far away as The Bronx, Queens, and Brewster, to participate in our unique way of proclaiming what we believe as Episcopalians in the Diocese of New York. And we are so fortunate to be able to proclaim and live out God's word in a beautiful chapel, parish hall, and gardens, set on six acres. Our chapel, built in 1859, has been the church home to Norman Rockwell, among other New Rochelle notables.
We are proud of our 159-year history, but we are especially proud to say that in 2018 we are an "open church" that constantly and purposefully seeks to create a warm and loving community, welcoming everyone regardless of where you might be on your spiritual journey. We hope you'll join us on Sunday mornings for worship at 10:30 a.m., for Bible Study on Tuesday evenings at 7:30, for Spiritual Discussion on Wednesdays at 12:30, and for any of our activities that are listed on our Worship & Event Schedule page. We can promise you one thing: It won't be dull!
Faithfully yours,
Stephanie Hartwell-Mandella and Christiane Quinif, Wardens and The Rev. Jennie Talley, Rector

St. John's Episcopal Church History
A Brief History of St. John's Wilmot
Though St. John's was founded officially on May 1, 1858, when a first Sunday school was held at Cooper's Corners in the house of Daniel T. Cox, the cornerstone for St. John's Church was laid on October 12, 1859, thanks to land donated by Mr. Cox and the architect Alexander Durand's low bid of $1,336. Built as a Chapel of Ease for those who found the five-mile trip to Trinity Church on the other end of town too difficult, especially in bad weather, the rector of Trinity Church, Dr. Richard Umstead, assisted by clergy from St. Thomas', Mamaroneck, and St. James-the-Less, Scarsdale, conducted the first service for Trinity's 'northern' parishioners at the groundbreaking ceremony. By the time the building was constructed, its final cost had increased by $64; but on February 4, 1860, the building was open for worship. Dr. Morgan presided, assisted by clergy from Pelham, White Plains, Scarsdale, and Eastchester.

Jesus gave His life so that you do not have to carry your burden. He knows this burden hinders you from having eternal life. He knows your sin burden hinders you from living the abundant life that God created you to live. He knows your sin hinders you from experiencing joy and peace that has no bounds and hinders you from receiving all that God has promised and created you to receive.
You just have to ask.
