St. Jude Catholic Church History
Our History
**Thank you Mrs. Estrella Estillore for 'writing' the history of our parish!** In 1967, a group of Catholics in Makakilo, started the Makakilo Catholic Club. Its goal was to begin establishing a church building fund for the future church in Makakilo. At the time, Catholics who lived in Makakilo belonged to the Immaculate Conception Church in Ewa. In 1969, the Makakilo Catholic Club changed its name to St. Jude Society with a goal of within 20 years building a church facility in Makakilo. About three years later, Father Benito Caraballo, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Church, began celebrating Sunday Masses at the Makakilo Elementary School cafeteria. In 1985, St. Jude Society became a mission under Immaculate Conception Church. Bishop Joseph Ferrario established St. Jude Parish on February 1, 1988 and appointed Fr. Jim Berry as pastor to service the areas of Makakilo, Honokai Hale and Barbers Point. The faithful community attended Masses at the Makakilo Recreation Center. In 1989, land was purchased upon which to build a church facility. Rev. Roland Pacudan, was the newly assigned pastor of the parish in 1992. Throughout the years, the parish has experienced many times when the celebrations of its liturgy had to be moved from the recreation center to neighborhood school cafeterias which included Makakilo Elementary, Mauka Lani Elementary and Kapolei Elementary and the Lion's Club Bunker. The Church held its ground breaking at the building site on 92-455 Makakilo Drive on May 7, 1998. After 30 years of prayers and bounding as a community of faith, the St. Jude Catholic Church facilities finally became a reality. Dedication service and celebration was held on February 14, 1999. While the Catholic community is presently growing, the parish is looking forward to increasing the parking lot, creating a meditation garden and constructing an additional building for religious instructions, youth center and conference rooms. St. Jude Church is bursting with activities during the week nights and weekend Masses are well attended. UPDATE
The crucifix was completed in time for 2004 Good Friday devotion. Our parishioners had the once-in-a-life-time opportunity to venerate and kiss this very special crucifix before it was hung up permanently.
Relics of the Cross and St. Jude
These precious relics are stored in a permanent frame and is on display in a special place in the back of our church for the faithful to venerate, place their petitions and pray. The petitions are placed in a basket and brought to the altar with the presentation of the gifts at the weekend Masses, and later stored in the chapel for the month. St. Jude Shrine
The outdoor shrine of St. Jude, located on the mauka front side of the church is completed and was blessed by Fr. Khanh on October 31st, in celebrating St. Jude's Feast Day. Our deepest appreciation to the men who gave of their talent, time and treasure in making the shrine a memorable and attractive one.
