St. Jude Parish History

●St. Jude Catholic Church of Gun Barrel City, Texas, began as a Mission of the Diocese of Dallas under St. Edward Catholic Church in Athens, Texas. The first Holy Mass was celebrated by Fr. Deacon Howard Palms was appointed to function as the permanent deacon in St. Edward's as well as at St. Jude's parish in May, 1978.

●St. Jude Church was built and on 28 October 1980, was dedicated by Most Rev. Thomas Tschoepe, then Bishop of Dallas. ●Deacon Richard Sykora, currently assigned to the Diocese of Dallas, became the second Permanent Deacon at St. Jude. Bishop Carmody officiated at the formal ground-breaking ceremony for the new St. Jude Church on 23 February 1999.

●In 1999, Fr. Carlos Rangel was assigned to St. Jude to celebrate Sunday Holy Mass in Spanish. After he was reassigned, Fr. Cristobal Hernandez was assigned to celebrate the Spanish Mass at St. Jude in November, 1999.

●In October 1999, Seminarian Francis O'Dowd was assigned to St. Jude as his home parish.

●On 5 March 2000, Bishop Carmody officially dedicated the new St. Jude Catholic church to a parish status.

●On September 09, 1994, Juan Cazares joined St. Jude and immediately began directing the choir. In 2002 he started his Deacon formation education and was ordained as a permanent Deacon on December 8, 2007 and still serves at St. Jude.

●On August 1, 2017, Fr. Dan Daugherty Retired. On this same day Deacon Richard Sykora retired as well.

●On September 1, 2017, our new pastor will begin his next chapter at our parrish. Fr. Kelly started and left after one year.

●Fr. Kelly was replaced by Pater John-Mary Bowlin

●On October 1, 2018, Fr. John-Mary Bowlin assumed the role of pastor.

There is much more history about the parish, the above is just a short summary of the life behind our beautiful and faith-filled parish. May God continue to bless and protect us as we continue to minister in the love of God, Who makes all things work according to His Will. Thanks for your interest.
