Who we are
Dear friends,
Welcome to St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church and School! Conveniently located on US 31 South just one mile south of Interstate 465, St. Mark is a parish of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis serving Catholics on the city’s south side. We welcome you to our website and we would be happy to have you join us for Sunday Mass.
It is a welcoming community! A friend of mine came to daily Mass and later told me that almost everyone in church that morning greeted him and welcomed him to St. Mark. It is part of the spirit of the parish. People who come to visit or to make their home with us are welcomed with open arms.
It is a vibrant community! Parishioners at St. Mark take seriously the call to live the faith we profess in our daily lives. Whether that means ministry to the poor, ministry to refugees, the inclusion ministry which strives to make our Masses and parish activities accessible to all parishioners or the ministry of Catholic education carried out in our parish school and our religious education program, things are hopping at St. Mark! At the heart of each of our ministries you will find loving, caring people striving to walk in the footsteps of Jesus.
It is a diverse community! The Catholic Church is a universal Church and that universality can clearly be seen at St. Mark. Blessed with a large refugee community from Burma that has made its home at St. Mark, our community also includes people from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. St. Mark is truly a ‘catholic’ community. It is a place where we come together as one family to celebrate and strengthen the strong bonds of faith by which we are united as Catholic Christians.
On behalf of our parish staff and the people of St. Mark Catholic Church and School I welcome you to our webpage and invite you join us in the parish that we are happy to call our home. See you at Mass!
In God’s love,
Fr. Todd

St Mark Catholic Church History
The History of St. Mark Parish
St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church and School are located on the southside of Indianapolis, at the corner of US 31 South and Edgewood Avenue. November 2, 1947 was the official ground breaking for the St. Mark School and Chapel. On May 1, 1947, Father Leo Schafer was formally appointed as the first pastor for St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Parish. The School had opening ceremonies on September 12, 1948 and officially opened for classes on Tuesday, September 21, 1948.
In September 1949, St. Mark opened a new convent as the new home of the parish nuns. Our rectory, which is still currently located on the adjacent lot next to the church, was built in 1950. On April 1, 1951, St. Mark celebrated the ground breaking for a new Church to replace the Chapel in the school building. On July 27, 1952, the parish moved into the new church that faced west on US 31 South.
St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church and School celebrated their Silver Anniversary in 1973. The parish continued to grow in numbers and spirituality. The school grew in number and in space with three additions, adding a library, two offices, a teacher’s lounge and brought the classrooms to 22.
In 1992, the parish broke ground for a new, larger and permanent Church building. The old church would become Schafer Hall and would be home to a multipurpose gymnasium and basement/cafeteria. The new church building was officially dedicated on September 26, 1993. St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church and school celebrated it 50 Year Golden Jubilee in 1998.

Lord, teach me to listen.
The times are noisy and my ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds which continuously assault them. Give me the spirit of the boy Samuel when he said to Thee, "Speak, for Thy servant heareth." Let me hear Thee speaking in my heart. Let me get used to the sound of Thy voice, that its tones may be familiar when the sounds of earth die away and the only sound will be the music of Thy speaking. Amen.
