Who we are
Brief History of St. Mark’s Parish
Because of the rapid growth of the Rothesay Parish, particularly to the northeast, Bishop A.J. Gilbert canonically erected the Parish of St. Mark's elected on March 31, 1978. It embraces the territory from the railway underpass in Rothesay (formerly Fairvale) to Hammond River. It serves Quispamsis, and the former Gondola Point and much of Fairvale.
Prior to construction of the church building in 1979, Mass was celebrated at the Fairvale Community Center and the Quispamsis Elementary School. Christmas 1979 was the occasion for the first Mass in the new edifice.
In recent years the territory served by St. Mark's has been the fastest growing area in the Province. At its inception, the Parish comprised 420 families. Presently, there are over 5,000 individuals from close to 1,700 households. The general population is relatively young.
Rev. Kevin Barry was the first Pastor, with Sr. Doreen McGuire scic, as Pastoral Assistant.
Rev. Dr. Brian Hansen, the second Pastor, was appointed in August 1989 by Bishop E.J. Troy. Two years later Sr. Constance Foley scic, was assigned as Pastoral Assistant.
Rev. Donald F. Breen, the present Pastor, was appointed in July 2000 by Bishop J. Faber MacDonald. Sister Anne Somers scic, became Associate in August 1999 until she retired in June 2009.
The three Crosses in the Courtyard are reminders of the salvific death of Christ. They also symbolize the three original communities encompassed bv the Parish.
