Who we are
St. Mary's Church is located in Fairfield, in the southeast part of Iowa. Early Catholic families who came to settle in Fairfield founded St. Mary's parish. around 1858. Mass was celebrated in the homes of the people or in the Courthouse, or in the "shanty." It was not until the summer of 1864 that ground was broken for the church building.
The Cornerstone of the former church was laid on July 21, 1907, on the same site as the original church. From 1858-1877, St. Mary's Parish was served by a number of priests who frequently traveled to Fairfield to minister to the needs of pioneer Catholics. On January , 2010, the new church at 3100 W. Madison was dedicated.
Today, St. Mary's is composed of over 800 parishioners from all walks of life who come together as Catholics to renew their spirits and practice their faith as one family in Christ.

Jesus, the Light of the World, as we celebrate your birth... may we begin to see the world in the light of understanding you give us. As you chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship you in meekness of heart. May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving. Amen.
