St Matthew Wesley United Church History

Presbyterian St Matthew’s in North Sydney became part of the United Church of Canada in 1925, when Methodists and some Presbyterian congregations amalgamated. In 2021, the congregation of St Matthew’s Wesley United Church left its spacious North Sydney home on Queen Street at Peppett to move into the smaller, former St Columba Presbyterian/United Church in Leitches Creek.

A reflection of the changes involved with downsizing is the marble baptismal font, one of several baptismal fonts belonging to the old church, which has been repurposed and positioned outside the former St Columba Church as a bird bath.

Leitches Creek is an extension of the northwest arm of Sydney Harbour. In 1827 and 1829, six Gaelic-speaking Presbyterian McDonald brothers immigrated from North Uist to Leitches Creek; John Beaton joined them in 1832. The first church, at Upper Leitches Creek, was built in 1841. The church at Lower Leitches Creek, St Columba, “was built in the year 1872, and the Manse along side of this church was built in the year 1901, during the ministry of the Rev. J. C. McLeod, at a cost of $2,250.”

According to the Rev. John Murray in History of the Presbyterian Church in Cape Breton: “North Sydney had practically no existence until the year 1834, when the General Mining Association built a coal shipping pier under the shelter of the North Bar and extended a railway from Sydney Mines to said pier, for the shipment of their coals. The construction work, in connection with this pier and railway, as well as the shipping that followed, created a considerable demand for labor and a heterogeneous population began to gather in the neighborhood of the shipping pier. The Bethel was built for the convenience of these people. That Bethel was the only Protestant place of worship in North Sydney until 1876, when St. Matthews and one or two other denominational churches were erected.

The first St. Matthews Church was dedicated on the 3rd of December, 1876. By the year 1898, this church was not adequate to the needs of the congregation, and a second church was built. It was dedicated on the sixth of March, 1899. The first church cost between five and six thousand dollars. The second church cost about eight thousand and was destroyed by fire on the 30th of September following its dedication.

The present church was dedicated on the 9th of June, 1901. It cost eighteen thousand dollars.” Presbyterian St Matthew’s in North Sydney became part of the United Church of Canada in 1925, when Methodists and some Presbyterian congregations amalgamated.
