St Michael in-the-Hamlet Service Times
Heritage Days - Saturdays (5th March - 29th October) - 10:00am to 4:00pm
St. Michael-in-the-Hamlet Church is a grade one listed building supported by English Heritage. It is one of only two churches of its type in the country. Completed in 1815 and consecrated on 21st June that year, the first service included thanksgiving for victory at the battle of Waterloo.
The building is supported by a cast iron frame, much the same as modern buildings are often supported by a steel frame. The builder, John Cragg, an iron founder built it at his own expense. Part of his reasoning was to promote that type of building, which could be easily transported and erected, say by missionaries going abroad. The building would remain standing without its side walls. It was also the intention of the builder that the building could be easily extended, as is the case with St. Michael's. One main feature is the lovely stained glass east window.
Some of the local houses were built in the same way.
The church has been an active Church of England Parish Church ever since but the Heritage days are intended for those who are interested in its architecture and history.
All visitors will be made welcome and guides and information booklets about the church's history will be available.
Every Saturday at 10:00 AM until Saturday 29th October 2016

Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart which no unworthy thought can drag downwards; an unconquered heart which no tribulation can wear out; an upright heart which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow upon me also, O Lord my God, understanding to know you, diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you, and a faithfulness that may finally embrace you; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
