Who we are
St. Patrick’s Church, The Island, was built by Fr. Robbins who was curate in Rahan from 1834 to 1847. The Island was formerly called the Island of Clonkeen. Bishop Anthony McGeoghegan, O.F.M., of Clonmacnoise, ordained St. Oliver Plunkett priest and deacon, in Rome in 1654. He later retired to Clonkeen and ordained priests in Ballycumber and Clonkeen during the penal times. The church was formally dedicated to St. Carthage but is now dedicated to St. Patrick
The Parish of Rahan is located to the west of Tullamore in County Offaly. Today it is a thriving community with three churches, a Presentation Convent, two primary schools and a prestigious secondary school. It is renowned in the county and further afield for its vibrant tradition of Irish music and strong contribution to Gaelic Games. It has the further distinction of being the residence of the former Taoiseach, Brian Cowen. Recently, for a period, it was the fastest growing community in County Offaly, with many houses being built, particularly in the area of Mucklagh, which adjoins Tullamore.

Open our ears to hear
Blessed Lord, open our ears to hear what Thou speakest and our eyes to see as Thou seest. Give us hearts to beat in sympathy with Thine at the sight of every little child; and above all, our Lord, to understand and experience how surely and how blessedly Thou fulfilest Thy promise, "Whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me."
