Who we are
The church of St Peter in Catcott is the oldest of the six churches in the Polden Wheel, dating back to 1292. It thus has had the privilege of hosting Christian worship for 725 years. St Peter’s continues to be a thriving centre for worship, offering a mix of traditional and more modern services to meet the needs of all in our village and beyond. We very much see ourselves as a living, growing church, rooted in the centuries of worship that have gone before. Our church family is very enthusiastic and friendly.
Services are generally held on the first and third Sunday of each month, ranging from BCP Communion and bi-monthly matins to a modern family-oriented Communion service. However, St Peter’s also welcomes those who wish to pray or meditate in solitude. For this purpose, the church is always open during daylight hours every day of the week. You will find an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity awaits you.
Those with an interest in ancient church buildings will also be rewarded by a visit to St Peter’s. With its Saxon windows, Norman font, Tudor roof beams and Jacobean furniture there is much to admire. Recent restoration work has uncovered fascinating wall paintings believed to be in excess of 500 years old, but concealed, probably during Puritan times. A short climb into our musicians’ gallery reveals a coat of arms dating back to George III and a fine perspective of the church, as does a more difficult climb to the top of the church tower (open by appointment).
