Saint Abba Shenouda Show comments

Saint Abba Shenouda (Shenoute) the Archimandrite (348-466 A.D.) was the abbot of the White Monastery of Atribe in the desert of Thebes, Egypt, for more than 65 years. He ruled over 2200 monks and 1800 nuns. He is called Archimandrite (the head of anchorites) because he used to practice the hermetic (isolated) life from time to time, and he also used to encourage some of his monks to withdraw to the desert after a few years of coenobetic life (living together in monastic community). In 431 A.D. he accompanied Pope St. Cyril the Great of Alexandria to the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus.

He created Egyptian nationalism or Coptism, getting rid of every Hellenistic (pagan) culture from the Coptic literature. Besides his deep spirituality, he was a political and a social reformer. Quoting, 'Any cursory study of the living conditions of the peasants in Upper Egypt at his time, reveals a sub-human living conditions. This was exemplified in their illiteracy and slavery to the Greek landlords and to the land they cultivated. Such slavery was a life sentence that only death could free them from it. Even after Christianity spread among them, their spirits were always dampened by the pagan landlords, who became more and more ferocious, especially after their slaves rejected their religion and adopted another (i.e. Christianity). The lack of leaders to defend them from such grave injustices, did not help either. This set the stage for the emergence of St. Shenouda as a leader of the oppressed populace.'
Shenouda was born of good Christian parents in a village near Akhmim in Upper Egypt. His father owned a cattle farm. Like David (in the Old Testament), his father used to send him to tend the sheep while he was yet a little boy. When Shenouda reached ten years old, he was put under the guidance of Abba Pijol (Pigol or Pegol), his maternal uncle and abbot of the Red Monastery.

As a youth, Shenouda proved to be spiritually minded to a rare degree, and strove continuously after spiritual excellence. He enjoyed studying and teaching both monks and laymen. And when Abba Pijol departed to heaven, Shenouda was elected to take his place as abbot. Under his guidance, the number of monks reached four thousand; 1800 of them in the Red Monastery and the rest in the White Monastery, while a few of them preferred a solitary life.
Shenouda was greatly concerned about organizing the monastic life. He devised a system that was in fact a combination of St. Anthony's hermetic life, and St. Pachomius coenobetic monasticism. He used to retreat to a remote cell and spend sometime in seclusion, then return to the monastery and participate in the monastic community.

Shenouda built a house outside the walls of the monastery for those who were waiting to be ordained monks. He appointed a chief to the monasteries (also called the archimandrite). He assigned specific periods for individual and group prayers. The doors of his monastery were opened to the villagers every Saturday evening. Thousands participated in the Vespers prayers, spent the night in the monastery, and shared in the celebration of the holy mass the next morning. After the mass, they were invited to share a meal, which the monks prepared and served. Shenouda took advantage of the presence of those people in the monastery to teach them the true faith inherited from the saintly fathers.
Abba Shenouda the Archimandrite lived in an age full of emotions and startling upheavals. It was an age in which the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus was convened, followed by the council of Chalcedon which started the rift between the churches. This same age witnessed the passing away of paganism from Egypt, after the desperate effort of Julian the Apostate to revive it. Finally, it was an age in which Egyptian nationalism reassured itself against all imperial forces. In the midst of this uprising, Shenouda towered like a beacon of light. He loved solitude, yet he shared the life of the world to the full, and was one of the unparalleled defiants against all Hellenistic tendencies. He used his talents of speaking and writing to inflame the crowds, using the pure Sahidic Coptic dialect of Upper Egypt. To all who heard him or read his writings, his words had the power of magic.

But his magic was not the magic of words only; he went about feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and sheltering the homeless. The schools attached to his monasteries did not serve the saints alone, but they also served those living in the vicinity as well. His doctors among the monks administered their science to all alike.

One instance of his outpouring love was evident when the Bagat Tribe attacked the region of Akhmim, capturing families and killing villagers. Hearing of this catastrophe, Shenouda crossed the Nile and went to the chief of the Bagats, saying, 'Take the riches and give me the people.' The chief readily accepted, and handed over to him hundreds of captives. Shenouda sheltered them in his monasteries for three months; he put the sick under the care of the doctors; the children were cared for by the educators, while the social workers looked after the aged and the infirm. All these specialists were from among his monks. During these three months, 94 of the refugees died and 52 babies were born. This instance indicates the well- organized system of the monks under the vigilant eyes of the Archimandrite.
Shenouda was not only a guide to monks, but was also in charge of 1800 nuns. To those he wrote several letters teaching, and guiding them in the right path. Fortunately, many of his writings still exist; they portray for us his clear thinking and deep spiritual insight.

St. Shenouda was also granted the gift of performing miracles in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; some of these miracles are listed in.

Shenouda was blessed with an unusual long life. He lived to be 118 years old. His fatherhood over monasteries and convents lasted 66 years. During his long life, Shenouda watched his people closely. His sympathy for them was boundless. Consequently, he became their spokesman and their defendant; and because he identified himself with them, he represented their national aspirations and led them to the realization of their higher selves. For those reasons, he is considered the liberator of Egyptian (Coptic) thought from the (political and pagan) shackles of Byzantium, and the truest representative of the Pharaonic (Ancient Egyptian) genius.

The White Monastery with which Shenouda is identified is unique among the Christian structures; it is more like a Pharaonic temple than a Christian sanctuary. It stands on the edge of the desert, west of Sohag (Upper Egypt), near the ancient town of Atribe. Historians think that it was built in the lifetime of Shenouda. The only remaining part of it is the church joined by the house of the priest. The monastery of St. Shenouda in Sohag was revived by the Coptic Orthodox Church in the late 1990s, and Coptic monks are now living there.

As for the Red Monastery, which gets its name from the red bricks of which it is built, nothing remains of it, except the church also. This monastery is called by the name of Abba Pishoi (Bishoy), a saintly monk of that era.
Shenouda became sick in his last years. His disciples took him to a hermit called Abba Thomas. At the end of their meeting, Thomas said, 'I would like to inform you, Father, that I will depart to heaven shortly. You will know that this happened when you see the big stone in front of your cell split in two. I beg you to come and pray on my body before you bury it.'
After st. Thomas passed away, Abba Shenouda became very sick, and he called his disciples to his cell. After he blessed them, he commended his soul in the hands of his Savior on July 14, 466 A.D. (Abib 7 - Coptic month/Coptic calendar). He left a great wealth of literature; some of which are preserved in the museums of Naples and London. His biography was written by his faithful disciple Wissa (Besa).

The child Paul (Boulos) Gabriel was born in 1829 (1545 A.M.) in Calad, a village in Upper Egypt. His parents were righteous and loved God. They sent him to the church school. His teacher Raphael took care of him, taught him reading, writing, arithmetic, the Holy Scriptures and psalms, ecclesiastical hymns, and psalmody. He was very intelligent and eager to learn everything.

When he was eight years old, his mother became very ill, and a few weeks later died, leaving behind her child. As he loved prayers and psalms, he discovered in them how God can bless his life and fill all his heart. When he was 15 years old, he got famous among his mates; the priests recommended him to Anba (Abba) Youssab, the bishop of the diocese, who ordained him as a deacon during his visit to the village's church.

As he loved the life of contemplation of God, so he joined Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Monastery "El-Meharrak" in Assiut, Upper Egypt, at the time when Rev. Father Abdel-Malek was in charge of the monastery. He was a very decent, active person, who loved all the monks. They recommended him and he was tonsured a monk when he was 19 years old, in 1848. His new name was Rev. Paul El-Meharraki.

He was distinguished by his patience and self-control, and his interest in almsgiving. Anba Yakoubos, the Bishop, heard about him, he asked him to come to the "Bishop's house" and to remain with him. Rev. Paul worked day and night, and he changed the "Bishop's house" to a shelter for the poor.

His deep eagerness for contemplating God caused him to ask the bishop to leave for the monastery again after he spent four years helping the bishop. Then the bishop ordained him as a priest and allowed him to return to the monastery in 1863. At that time there was a problem regarding Father Abdel-Malek, who was in charge of the monastery, but Father Paul did not interfere with these problems. So the monks chose him (Paul) to be in charge of the monastery. He opened the doors of the monastery for poor people, also young men heard about him and came, asking him to teach them, and after a short time they had forty new monks.

(The late Anba Marcos, Bishop of Luxor, was ordained as a monk in 1870 at El-Meharrak Monastery and grew up under the leadership of Fr. Paul. Pope Kyrillos V chose him in 1876 to teach the new monks at El-Baramous Monastery (see below). He met his spiritual father again after five years, and remained with him until 1879, when he was consecrated a Bishop for Luxor. Up till now the people still remember much about his pure life, his holiness, deep love for praying, his modesty, and his special care about everyone, and about renewing the old churches and constructing new ones.)

As usual the devil was furious when he saw the monastery opened for the poor, and young people changed with love for Jesus Christ and continuous prayers, so he made some of the monks think that Fr. Paul was wasting the money of the monastery and they rebelled against him. In 1870, Fr. Paul was asked to leave the monastery after five years in charge of it. He went with four of his students to Cairo to meet Anba Marcos, Metropolitan of El-Behira, who was at that time the acting Pope. They were directed to go to the Monastery of Anba Bishoy at the Natroun-Valley in the western desert of Egypt, where they remained for a short period. Afterwards they went to the next-door El-Baramous Monastery in 1871. At that time the president of this monastery was Fr. John, who later became Pope Kyrillos V. He was so glad to receive them, and offered them a place to stay.

Fr. Paul devoted all his time to prayer and study, but his deep love for the poor people did not end. He loved the hostile Arabs (Bedouins) who were living in the area of the monastery and he shared with them everything he had, even his clothes.

In 1881, the Ethiopian Emperor, John Kassa, asked Pope Kyrillos V, to ordain a metropolitan and three bishops for the Ethiopian Empire, so he chose the four fathers who were accompanying Fr. Paul. At the same time, Anba Isaac, Metropolitan of the province of Fayoum and Giza, departed, then the four fathers asked the Pope to ordain their father as a bishop for that diocese. The Pope and the people of Fayoum became happy and joyful on that day for the ordination of their new bishop, Anba Abraam, in 1881. During his time, the Diocese of El-Fayoum became a great vine, in whose shadow the poor and rich sat with great delight.

When the Khedive Tawfik, Ruler of Egypt, visited El-Fayoum, they made a great lunch-party. Anba Abraam was sitting very near to the Khedive. He did not eat except salad, and when the Khedive asked him he answered that the day was Friday and Christians are to fast on all Fridays. Then he ordered that fruits be brought and asked Anba Abraam to meet him again. He went to meet him at the railway station before he left, and the Khedive welcomed him deeply saying to him "You are a blessed man..." The rulers and governers, even tyrannical ones, found rest in him, so the simple bishop's home became their rest place.

In the year 1893 he was seriously ill with his leg, such that doctors decided to perform surgery to cut off his leg. When one of his spiritual children told him, he smiled, as usual, and said "God will not let it happen. I am sure He will let them down!" After two months he recovered completely, and went out to the Church, praising God. The Bishop's house was very crowded. The people held the palm leaves and they were waving the olive branches with joy when they heard of his recovery.

Our blessed father Anba Abraam departed to Paradise on Thursday, June 9, 1914 (2 Baounah 1630 A.M.) after sunset, i.e., the onset of June 10, 1914. More than ten thousand persons attended his funeral, both Christians and Moslems (twenty five thousand persons in some accounts). But the history of Anba Abraam has not ended. In every Egyptian home there is still a lot to be told about him, for he was truly a God-loving man. The saint's body is preserved at the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of El-Fayoum in Egypt.

In 1964, the Holy Synod of Coptic Orthodox Bishops decided to add his name to the saints mentioned in the Holy Mass, and many Coptic Orthodox churches around the world today are named after him.

Miracles

It happened that Anba Abraam received furniture for the episcopate. He refused to use it, and asked the servant to put it in storage. When a woman came to him complaining that her daughter's engagement would not result in a wedding, because they didn't have money to buy furniture for her and her future husband, Anba Abraam told the servant to show her the new furniture, and let her take what she needed. Some of the people complained to Pope Kyrillos V about giving away the furniture. Afterwards, there was a collection to build a new house of the episcopate. Anba Abraam gave that money also to the poor and the needy: another complaint. The Pope summoned him, and he went without delay, though he was an old man, with poor eyesight. On his arrival, he was rushed in to see the Pope in his suite. It was a summer afternoon, a ray of the sun through a hole in the shade of the window was mistaken by Anba Abraam as a rope (for hanging clothes, which was a habit in those days to install ropes for hanging clothes). Anba Abraam threw his "farageyia" (coat) on it, and it stayed there! The Pope, seeing how the Lord is working wonders to support and not embarrass this saint on earth, changed the purpose of the call, and instead inquired about his health and gave him 15,000 Egyptian Pounds to build a new house for the episcopate. When the people came back to see the Pope, he scolded them for their lack of faith, concluding, "How can I argue with a man of God who was able to hang his coat on a ray of the sun?" The new house of the episcopate was not built in Anba Abraam's lifetime. The money was again used to help the poor.

Countless other miracles occurred during St. Abraam's earthly life and after his departure to Heaven. Miracles also continue to occur to this day through the intercession of St. Abraam.

The church was purchased in November 2015 by the Baptist Church, a church in the upper floor, a hall under the church, a kitchen, three rooms and a bathroom, and currently there is a cabin of the kitchen and three rooms divided into a priest's room, a library room and an air conditioning room.

At first the service began within the church by visiting some fathers like our Father hegumen Botros the priest of the Church of Mar mina in Nashville and our Father hegumen Elia and our Father hegumen Abd al-Malak and our Father hegumens Gerges and our Father the hegumen Boules and our Father hegumen Rewes and Father hegumen Botros gaid for the work of mass service twice a month and some occasions we honored by the visit his grace bishop Karas and he ordinate some deacons.

About two years later, the church was transformed into an Orthodox church with a veil of structure, a special altar and baptism for the children, and the service began to be organized in the church with our father, the monk hegumen Pavlos el Anba Bishoy. Hence, the services began on Saturday and Sunday of every week and on occasions and began the service of the various church. تم شراء الكنيسة في شهر نوفمبر 2015 من الكنيسة المعمدانية وهى عباره عن الكنيسة في الدور العلوى وقاعه اسفل الكنيسة ومطبخ وثلاث حجرات وحمام وحاليا هناك حجره للقربان من داخل المطبخ والثلاث حجرات مقسمه الى حجره للاب الكاهن وحجره مكتبه وحجره للتكييف.

في البداية بدأت الخدمة داخل الكنيسة بزياره بعض الإباء مثل ابونا القمص بطرس كاهن كنيسه مارمينا بناشفيل وابونا القمص إيليا و ابونا القمص عبد الملاك وابونا القمص جرجس و ابونا القمص بولس وابونا القمص رويس لعمل خدمه القداس مرتين في الشهر وبعض المناسبات وشرفنا بالزيارة الانبا كاراس وقام برسامه شمامسة

وبعد حوالى عامين قد تم تحويل الكنيسة الى كنيسه ارثوذكسيه بعمل حجاب للهيكل ومذبح ومعموديه خاصه للأطفال و بدأت تنتظم الخدمة في الكنيسة بوجود ابونا الراهب القمص بافلوس الانبا بيشوى.

ومن هنا بدأت القداسات يومي السبت والأحد من كل أسبوع وفى المناسبات وبدات خدمات الكنيسة المختلفة من معموديه ومدارس احد وافتقاد وتبريك منازل وصلاه الحميم (الطشت) واجتماعات والقناديل وحفظ الالحان وتنظيم رحلات
