Leader Bio:
Rev. Msgr. Francis Kurzaj, or rather, the preferred “Fr. Frank”, was named Pastor of St. Stanislaus Church in Bandera, Texas and its Mission, St. Victor in Lakehills. Fr. Frank was born April 19, 1951 to George and Elizabeth Kurzaj and grew up with two brothers, Gerard and Joachim, in the region of Silesia in Poland. In 1970 he entered the Major Priest Seminary and on May 16, 1976 was ordained as priest for the Diocese of Opole, Poland. For the next eight years he served in three different parishes in the town of Bytom and then became a Vocation Director for his Diocese, and a faculty member of the Major Priest Seminary in Nysa-Opole. While in Poland, he received his Master’s degree in Theology (M.Th) and Licentiate in Ecumenical Theology (STL) from the Catholic University of Lublin.
Invited by Archbishop Patricio Flores, DD, he came to Texas on November 22, 1986. In the Archdiocese of San Antonio, he served in Castroville, Panna Maria, Helena, Falls City, Runge, Kenedy, Holy Name-San Antonio, St. Paul-San Antonio, Sacred Heart-Floresville and was recently the Administrator Pro-Tem of Our Lady of Atonement Roman Catholic Parish until the community became part of the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter. When in America, he continued his studies at San Antonio College, St. Mary’s University and the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary where in 1995 he earned the degree of Doctor of Ministry. Fr. Frank is member of the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors.
Even though he loves Texas, his love for his native Silesia remains strong. Annually he takes people from Texas to Silesia, Poland, where many of them find their roots. To build a cultural bridge between Texas and Silesia, in 2001, he established the Father Leopold Moczygemba Foundation. (www.flmfoundation.org)
His work and leadership is appreciated and recognized, both, in the United States and Poland. In 1998, at the recommendation of Archbishop Patricio Flores, DD, he was granted the title “Monsignor” by Pope John Paul II, and in 2004, he was recognized by the President of Poland who presented him with the Krzyz Oficerski Orderu Zaslugi Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (The Officer Cross of the Order of Merit to the Republic of Poland).

St. Victor Chapel History
St. Victor's History
Our History Written by St. Victors Chapel.
The Story of St. Victor's Chapel History (1956-2003) Before the Chapel existed, the residents of Medina Lake had to travel as far as Bandera, Boerne, or Helotes to attend Mass. When Rev. Charles Schmidtzinsky became pastor of St. Stanislaus in Bandera, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Mazurek saw their chance for a Catholic church closer to home. They inquired about establishing a chapel at the lake. As a result, a meeting was held at Adolph's Store, Medina Lake, on January 15, 1956, with 29 people in attendance; 13 families registered.
The first Mass was celebrated on Sunday, February 12, 1956, in the store, a space of 18 'x 63', housing the first congregation with an attendance of 61 people. Picnic benches served as the pews. The store was later bought for $3900 from Gilbert and Letha Mazurek.
Since, Fr. Victor had been so supportive of the chapel, permission was granted to name the church after him. The original St. Victor was the first Black Pope and was from Africa. He became Pope in 189 A.D.
Many improvements have been made to the original rock store. The first pews were donated by St. Anthony's Shrine, and later ones were donated by St. Paul's Parish, both of San Antonio. The first vestments were made by Mrs. Florence Mayer, and the first altar furnishings were donated by Mr. & Mrs. H.H. Wagner. The first Call-to-Church bell was donated by Mrs. Helen DeLange. 17 additional lots were acquired by the chapel for future use.
Over the years, we have had several organs for the chapel, but only two organists, Gus Wegmann, who has gone to Lord, and Dorothy Riley who has retired as Music Minister. Since then, Diana & Jeffrey Edwards and family have provided us with music.
In the past years, pavilions have been erected, one of which has been converted to a large air conditioned hall. One new building and a used building have been added to house the growing Religious Education Program, and other uses such as meeting rooms for various committees.
Recently, new windows were installed in the chapel along with new curtains, allowing in more light. All of these improvements have materialized through the benevolence of some of our dearest parishioners.
The Spring Festival, held every year on the first Sunday in June, and the Turkey Supper, held on first Saturday of November, have been a great support for the chapel.
NEW CHURCH BUILDING CONSTRUCTION
In January of 2018, construction began on a new church building for St. Victor Chapel. The new building was designed by Mark Morkovsky of Morkovsky & Associates and constructed by J. C. Stoddard Construction. During construction, all activities in the hall where cancelled because the Hall became the temporary place of worship. After a year of inconvenience and construction, the new building was completed in January 2019. A dedication Mass was held on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 4:00PM. Archbishop Gusatvo Garcia-Siller was the principal celebrant for the Mass and ceremony. Concelebrants included Msgr. Frank Kurzaj (Pastor), Very Reverend John Nolan (Past Pastor), the Priests of the Archdiocese of San Antonio and Deacon Carl Rutkowski. The Mass and celebration was beautiful and well attended by parishioners of both St. Victor and St. Stanislaus, area officials and church leaders, family and friends of St. Victor and retired priests who shared in the celebration of weekend Masses in the old Chapel.
