Teabo United Methodist Church History
History of Teabo UMC
Teabo Churchwas established in 1870 by Welsh and Cornish miners from England who were brought to the United Statesas immigrants to labor in the mines.
Long before 1870, and long before there was a church building, these men and women formed themselves into Methodist classes and worshipped as they had in England, meeting in their homes.
Owners of the mines granted plots of ground to the miners’ religious societies and built local churches. Area business persons of the time donated organs, pews, and all that was needed for the interior. For the miners, the church was a place of peace, freedom from the everyday stress of mining, a time of fellowship with one another, and a place for spiritual growth and renewal.
Today, over 150 years later, Teabo remains a place of respite from day-to-day stress, an opportunity to renew and grow in the Spirit of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, through our worship services, and a welcoming place for fellowship with one another.
History of Lower Berkshire Valley UMC
The first record of regular religious services in Lower Berkshire Valley, found in the autobiography of Absalom Steelman, traces the beginning of the congregation to the mid-nineteenth century. Rev. Steelman, a Circuit Rider in the Longwood area in the years 1865-1871, wrote, “I’m going from my home in Succasunna to my charge in Longwood, and returning, my route lay through Lower Berkshire Valley, and while passing through on my way home after holding one of my meetings, I was hailed by two men with the request that I would preach at that place in the old school house. I complied and preached there about four years.” Thus our began in an old school house on this same site. Merged in 2019
The congregations of Teabo UMC and Lower Berkshire Valley UMC were merged in June 2019. The un-official name of the new congregation is Teabo Berkshire United Methodist Church, however the official name is Teabo UMC. The Church building in Lower Berkshire Valley has been sold as worship services for the merged congregation are held at Teabo. The first worship service as a merged congregation was held on June 30, 2019. As Lower Berkshire Valley UMC and Teabo UMC begin a new ministry together, we will remain faithful to God’s call to serve.

Love me, Lord, just for today
Lord, for tomorrow and its needs, I do not pray; Keep me, my God, from stain of sin just for today. Let me both diligently work, And duly pray. Let me be kind in word and deed, Just for today. Let me be slow to do my will, Prompt to obey; Help me to sacrifice myself Just for today. And if today my tide of life should ebb away, Give me thy sacraments divine, Sweet Lord today. So for tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, But keep me, guide me, love me, Lord, Just for today.
