Who we are
The people at The Church on the Corner are friendly and welcoming with similar backgrounds, life experiences, and questions about spirituality and faith as yourself. We reflect a diversity that matches the community in which we live here in the Albany/Berkeley Bay Area. Each Sunday brings a chance to get to know each other, worship together, and support each other in faith.
Whether you’re new to church, haven’t attended in a long time, or are a regular attendee, you hope you will feel comfortable and welcome here – come as you are, and worship in a casual and loving environment. Check out our scheduled events throughout the week and month to find more ways to connect and worship! If you are not quite ready to attend a church service but have questions and/or would just like to check us out, please consider watching our worship service live on YouTube every Sunday starting at 10 AM!
During service hours, both child care and Sunday school for all ages are available. Parents check children in before service with one of our wonderful children’s leaders. They will then attend Sunday School or Nursery for the duration of service. (Please see our Children & Youth page for more information.)
Complimentary coffee and food are available before and after service so feel free to come early and stay late – we love to chat!
If you’re a sports fan, we are now playing Sunday’s big games on our patio on our hi-def, big screen TV after the service!
Please feel free to email or call us anytime for specific questions or if you would just like to get to know us better by speaking to someone face-to-face.

Leader Bio:
Tom Cullen has served as the lead pastor of The Church on the Corner in Albany, CA since 2002. He is an ordained Minister of the Gospel by American Baptist Churches USA and Growing Healthy Churches. Tom also serves on the staff of Growing Healthy Churches. A primary responsibility in that role has been to help plant new churches, as well as to coach and mentor existing churches and pastors. Previously he served 25 years with GTE Corporation, which is now a part of Verizon. He served in various capacities, starting with delivering mail on to being director/general manager for a multi-state business unit. His corporate life taught him about people, leadership, mission and accountability which God is now using to run the Father’s business.
He and his wife Dorothy reside in the SF Bay Area. His son Brett and wife Bekah have three children. His daughter Megan and husband Matt and have two children.
His personal interests include reading, staying up on current events, sports, target shooting, bike riding, and spending time with family.
Tom’s passion is helping people to grow to become spiritually maturing, self-feeding, world-changing Christ followers. This includes mentoring the arising generation and leaders to serve effectively in ministry. This passion was born out of the lessons he’s learned on his journey of life: that living life in alignment with Jesus makes life work best and it allows you to be a part of the bigger mission to change the world for Christ.
Tom’s formal education includes:
B.S. Economics & Finance, Indiana University, 1979
MSBA, General Management, Indiana Univesity, 1986
MBA, General Management, Indiana University, 1988
MDIV, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, 2004
Tom’s wife, Dorothy, serves as the Children’s Ministry Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, and web designer.
Dorothy began her spiritual journey as a young adult in college on a quest for “truth” having been raised with Catholicism. She began this quest through existentialism and the new age philosophies. These ultimately led her down an empty, mechanical and loveless quest towards meaningless and nothingness.
For years, she found it comfortable to depend on the distorted portrayals of the Bible from the media. Once she began to read the Bible for herself, however, she realized how amazingly relevant it was. It even answered her questions about the complexities of life and the importance of love, and why it seems like there is an indescribable intelligence behind everything in the universe.
Once she came to understand who Jesus was and accepted Him as her personal Lord and Savior, she felt that that was the moment when suddenly the lights turned on in her life! Since then, she has been passionate about sharing the truth about Jesus with others!

The Church on the Corner History
The Church On The Corner came into existence on September 6, 1908 as a house church in the residence of Mrs. L.S. Hiney of Albany. By November 7, 1908 a building for the new church was underway at Stannage and Brighton Avenues. Service at this location began on February 28, 1909 under the name of Chapel Immanuel Baptist Church.
The church later moved to a new facility built at Portland Ave. and Key Route Boulevard and was renamed to First Baptist Church of Albany. Its current building at 1319 Solano Avenue was built and dedicated into ministry on June 27, 1948.
On July 2, 2005 the name of the church was changed to The Church On The Corner. This name was chosen because many people in the community refer to it that way. On November 2, 2008, Mayor Lieber proclaimed this date to be “Church on the Corner Day” for the City of Albany in commemoration of the church’s 100 years of existence in and service to the Albany community.
The Church On The Corner is affiliated with Growing Healthy Churches [GHC]. GHC is based in San Ramon, CA and is comprised of almost 250 churches. Many GHC churches are located in northern California and northwest Nevada which are part of a growing national presence through the planting of churches in all regions of the country. The Church On The Corner is affiliated with GHC because of the mutual alignment of core values of being Bible-based and Christ-centered and having a common mission and vision.

Forgive us
O God, forgive the poverty and the pettiness of our prayers . Listen not to our words but to the yearnings of our hearts. Hear beneath our petitions the crying of our need.
