The English Martyrs History
A building which started life as an independent chapel has "great potential for conversion into residential or commercial premises", according to estate agents.
Situated on Buxton Road in Bakewell, the Grade II listed building has obviously had a varied history. Built in 1844 in Gothic style, it started life as Congregational chapel with a schoolroom underneath in the basement.
It was purchased by the Diocese of Nottingham in 1948 and was dedicated to the English Martyrs and then served as an associate chapel to All Saints Catholic Church in Hassop for the following 71 years.
It closed its doors as a Catholic church 12 months ago and is on the market for offers in excess of £250,000 by Spencer Birch Chartered Surveyors in Nottingham.
The church is constructed of Ashlar sandstone and rubble limestone with a pitched slate roof. The basement has two separate open plan rooms with access to an outside small raised courtyard at the rear of the building.
