Who we are
Kelowna, March 23rd, 1961. In this small, tranquil town nestled in the Okanagan Valley, God was stirring the hearts of a group of Christ followers. Their desire was to share God’s love with their friends and neighbours and to capture the hearts of the younger generation by providing a worship experience they would be able to connect with. The idea of birthing a church in the English language was born. A group of young families caught the vision and with the blessing of the Mother church, Grace Baptist, Trinity’s journey began. A place where families, neighbours, coworkers and the next generation would feel welcome and accepted, and where one day they would encounter the life changing power of Jesus.
These are the faces of the people God used to birth this church 50 years ago. They were passionate about making the transformational love of God real and relevant … and although 50 years have passed, those who are still living continue to carry that passion. It is because of their vision, their faithfulness and obedience, that we are sitting in this room today. Meeting in the basement of Grace Baptist Church, Trinity began with Reverend E. H. Nikkel as their first pastor. Old-timers still refer to that era as the time they were “under grace.”

Trinity Baptist Church History
THE BEAUTIFUL OKANAGAN
We were founded in 1961 to teach others to Love God, Love Others, and Change the World Through Christ. We’ve been blessed in our operations for over 50 years, and today we’re recognized as having the largest congregation in Kelowna. Read more about how we got to where we are today.
1961
A courageous God-given vision to reach into the community to teach and equip our children for the Christian life was born on March 23rd, 1961. Trinity Baptist Church was organized with 72 charter members. In the same year the church became affiliated with the North American Baptist Conference and the BC Association.
1962
Initial services were held in the lower auditorium of the mother church, Grace Baptist Church. July 1st, 1962, found our small church laying the cornerstone on our own church property on the corner of Sutherland Ave. and Burtch Rd. Plans for a new church complex began in 1968. This building was sold to the Salvation Army and a new building site was purchased.
Our first pastor, Rev. E. H. Nikkel, conducted services at Grace Baptist and led the Trinity group as they launched out and established a new church. He was a sincere, dedicated leader serving the church until his retirement in 1965.
1965
In July 1965, Rev. John Wollenberg succeeded Rev. E. H. Nikkel in the pastoral ministry role. Through God’s blessing; continuous growth and the need for expansion became very evident. Our current building site is on Springfield Rd. and Spall Rd.
1974
In 1974, a number of members began a church ministry on the westside in the Lakeview Heights area establishing the Lakeview Heights Baptist Church.
Rev. Richard Hohensee became the pastor in September 1975, and served until 1985. Because of the steady growth of the church and changing needs of Christian Education, a 12,000 foot education facility was constructed through his tenure. He was a caring man who was always concerned about the well-being of others.
1985
In October 1985, Rev. Tim Schroeder brought with him a new vision. With his leadership Trinity moved into a new 1400 seat auditorium. The ministries flourished through the expansion. This dynamic growth led to the project of a lifetime building expansion. Pastor Tim continued to lead as our Teaching Pastor.
1987
In 1987, the first building constructed was removed from Springfield and Spall Roads and that building now serves Lake Country Alliance Church in Winfield.
This new building on 3.5 acres had a 21,900 square foot floor area, plus a balcony, and 1,500 square feet of basement. The sanctuary, balcony and choir loft had a combined seating capacity for 700 people. The educational unit area had 15 separate classrooms, a fireside room, large activity area and kitchen.
1991
God’s blessings continued and several construction projects were completed, with the adjoining property acquired in 1991.
2001-2005
During 2001-2005 the church experienced strong growth. In the midst of a changing city, new approaches to ministry were undertaken and the search began for a new senior pastor.
2003
Kelowna was engulfed by a firestorm in the summer of 2003 that destroyed 239 homes in the southern end of the city. Trinity had a vital role as a food support centre for emergency personnel and also an evacuation centre for many families that were displaced.
2008
Pastor Wayne Alguire began his ministry as Senior Pastor in February 2008. With his insight and fresh vigour, he prayerfully worked to refocus the vision and value of our church through the ministry team. The result has been a church organizationally prepared to impact Kelowna and beyond with the love and message of Christ.
2015
Trinity embarks on a capital campaign to raise funds for a new Next Gen Building for youth.

Light of the World
Jesus, the Light of the World, as we celebrate your birth... may we begin to see the world in the light of understanding you give us. As you chose the lowly, the outcasts, and the poor to receive the greatest news the world had ever known, so may we worship you in meekness of heart. May we also remember our brothers and sisters less fortunate than ourselves in this season of giving. Amen.
