Who we are

Trinity Church been a presence in Muscatine since 1839 when people began gathering in Matthew Matthews’ home as a community of faith. Over the years, we have continued the practice of worshipping, growing, and serving as faithful children of God.

Worship is rooted in the Book of Common Prayer, but we also explore other resources to enhance our liturgical life. We welcome and seek to involve people of all ages and backgrounds as we walk our journey in faith, with an intimate awareness of the cloud of witnesses who have walked the path before us. A variety of music is brought to us through song in a small choir, a magnificent Cassavant organ, and Yamaha Clavinova keyboard. From time to time we enjoy informal worship in the parish hall, a public park, or outdoors on the church lawn.

We seek to grow our faith through formation experiences that evolve as needs change. Among our offerings are Ecumenical and diocesan youth programs, confirmation, and adult formation opportunities.

Trinity has been the birthplace for a number of social action programs, most recently Jubilee Committee (2012) and Laundry Love (2016). Brought to life by Trinity individuals, these programs continue to thrive on their own energy and community support, making a difference for people in the Muscatine area.

At Trinity, all are welcome to come as they are – to discover something both old and new; to experience divine love as a child of God and a disciple of Christ; to realize the value of a community of faith that lives through joys and challenges together, remembering our center of Holy Love emanating through us, with us and in us.

Leader Bio:
The Reverend Kevin Powell has served as the pastor, priest, and rector of Trinity Church since September 2020. Prior to this, he was a transitional deacon at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Dubuque, Iowa.

A native of northeastern Iowa, Rev. Kevin grew up in the driftless area near Strawberry Point. He attended Iowa State University, earning a B.S. in Animal Science with an emphasis in Biotechnology, Chemistry, and American Indian Studies. It was at ISU that Kevin met Marcia, the love of his life. They married in 1988 and are parents of five children.

Following his undergraduate studies, Kevin and Marcia returned to the family farm near Strawberry Point, where they ran a diversified livestock and crop operation. Recognizing the challenges of the farm economy, Kevin transitioned to full-time work “in town” while continuing to farm part-time. His career included roles in quality assurance, scheduling, and production management for multinational corporations. Later, he became a real estate appraiser but shifted again after the 2008 housing crisis. Kevin then worked as a location manager for a local farm cooperative, overseeing crop management, livestock nutrition, fuels, and propane.

Amid these professional transitions, Kevin felt a persistent call to ordained ministry, initially in the United Methodist Church and later in the Episcopal Church. Though he resisted at first, he eventually embraced the call, seeking a path to ordination. While working as a bus driver for a rural paratransit agency, Kevin pursued part-time hybrid coursework at Bexley Seabury Seminary in Chicago, where he earned degrees in Anglican Studies and a Master of Divinity.

Education has always been a cornerstone of Kevin’s life. He served for 16 years on the Starmont School Board and contributed to various statewide education boards in Iowa. Currently, he is a director for the Iowa School Employee Benefits Association and a trustee for the Bexley Seabury Seminary Federation in Chicago. Kevin is also currently the chair of the Commission on Ministry for the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa.

Rev. Kevin (or Father, Pastor - titles aren’t what matter most to him) brings a wealth of diverse experiences and a commitment to ministry, community, and education to his work at Trinity Episcopal Church in Muscatine.   Edit

Trinity Episcopal Church History

Trinity Episcopal Church, along the Mississippi River in Muscatine, Iowa, was completed in late fall 1841. Jackson Kemper, the first Episcopal Missionary Bishop in the country, visited Bloomington (now Muscatine) while the wood framed, two-story church was being constructed under the leadership of Matthew Matthews. These founder completed the first Episcopal Church in Iowa. (Trinity was also the first church building in Muscatine County).

In 1851 a group of members raised $2,500 to construct a new stone church at the same location near the corner of Walnut Street and Second Street in Muscatine, Iowa where we still proudly stand today. The existing church's cornerstone was laid on November 11, 1851.

During the 1970's Trinity Episcopal Church became a Jubilee Ministry Church. Jubilee Centers empower the poor and oppressed in their communities by providing direct services such as food, shelter, and health care and also by advocating for human rights.

The power of Christian prayer Let no darkness overtake me
Visit, I beseech thee, O Lord, this habitation with thy mercy, and me with thy grace and salvation. Let thy holy angels pitch their tents round about and dwell here, that no illusion of the night may abuse me, the spirits of darkness may not come near to hurt me, no evil or sad accident oppress me; and let the eternal Spirit of the Father dwell in my soul and body, filling every corner of my heart with light and grace. Let no deed of darkness overtake me; and let thy blessing, most blessed God, be upon me for ever, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
