Who we are
What We Believe
The Scriptures
The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments were given by inspiration of God, and are the only sufficient, certain and authoritative rule of all saving knowledge, faith and obedience. God
There is but one God, the Maker, Preserver and Ruler of all things, having in and of Himself all perfections and being infinite in all of them; and to Him all creatures owe the highest love, reverence and obedience.
The Trinity
God is revealed to us as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, each with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence or being. Providence
God from eternity decrees or permits all things that come to pass, and perpetually upholds, directs and governs all creatures and all events; yet, so as not in any wise to be the author or approver of sin not to destroy the free will and responsibility of intelligent creatures.
Election
Election is God’s eternal choice of some persons unto everlasting life, not because of foreseen merit in them, but of His mere mercy in Christ in consequence of which choice they are called justified and glorified.
The Fall of Man
God originally created man in His own image and free from sin; but, through the temptation of Satan, he transgressed the command of God and fell from his original holiness and righteousness; whereby his posterity inherent nature corrupt and wholly opposed to God and His law are under condemnation, and as soon as they are capable of moral action, become actual transgressors.
The Mediator
Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, is the divinely appointed mediator between God and man. Having taken upon Himself human nature, yet without sin, He perfectly fulfilled the law, suffered and died upon the cross for the salvation of sinners. He was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended to His Father, at whose right hand He forever liveth to make intercession for His people. He is the only Mediator, Prophet, Priest, and King of the Church and Sovereign of the universe who will come again in glory for all true believers among the living and the dead.
Regeneration
Regeneration is a change of heart, wrought by the Holy Spirit, who quickeneth the dead in trespasses and sins, enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the Word of God, and renewing their whole nature, so that they love and practice holiness. It is a work of God’s free and special grace alone.
Repentance
Repentance is an evangelical grace, wherein a person being, by the Holy Spirit, made sensible of the manifold evil of sin, humbleth himself for it, with godly sorrow, detestation of it, and self-abhorrence, with a purpose and endeavor to walk with God so as to please Him in all things.
Faith
Saving Faith is the belief, on God’s authority, of whatsoever is revealed in His Word concerning Christ; accepting and resting upon Him alone for justification, sanctification and eternal life. It is wrought in the heart by the Holy Spirit, and is accompanied by all other saving graces and leads to a life of holiness.
Justification
Justification is God’s gracious and full acquittal of sinners, who believe in Christ, from all sin, through the satisfaction that Christ has made, not for anything wrought in them or done by them; but on account of the obedience and satisfaction of Christ, they receiving and resting on Him and His righteousness by faith.
Sanctification
Those who have been regenerated are also sanctified by God’s word and have the Spirit dwelling in them. This Sanctification is progressive through the supply of Divine strength, which all saints seek to obtain, pressing after a heavenly life in cordial obedience to all Christ’s commands.
Perseverance of the Saints
Those whom God hath accepted in the beloved and sanctified by His Spirit, will never totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace, but shall certainly persevere to the end; and though they may fall, through neglect and temptation, into sin, whereby they grieve the Spirit, impair their graces and comforts, bring reproach on the Church and temporal judgement on themselves, yet they shall be renewed again unto repentance, and be kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation.
The Church
The Lord Jesus is the Head of the Church, which is composed of all His true disciples, and in Him is invested supremely all power for its government. According to His commandments, Christians are to associate themselves into particular societies or churches; and to each of these churches, He hath given needful authority for administering that order, discipline and worship which He hath appointed. The scriptural officers of a church are Bishops or Elders (Pastors and Deacons).
Baptist
Baptism is an ordinance of the Lord Jesus, obligatory upon every believer wherein he is immersed in water in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, as a sign of his fellowship with the death and resurrection of Christ, of remission of sins, and of his giving himself up to God, to live and walk in newness of life. It is prerequisite to church fellowship and to participation in the Lord’s Supper.
The Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper is an ordinance of Jesus Christ, to be administered with the elements of bread and wine, and to be observed by His churches until the second coming of Christ. It is in no sense a sacrifice, but is designed to commemorate His death, to confirm the faith and other graces of Christians, and to be a bond pledge and renewal of their communion with Him, and of their church fellowship.
The Lord’s Day
The Lord’s Day is a Christian institution for regular observance and should be employed in exercises of worship and spiritual devotion, both public and private, resting from worldly employments and amusements with works of necessity and mercy the only exceptions.
Liberty of Conscience
God alone is Lord of the conscience and He hath left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men, which are in anything contrary to His word, or not contained in it. Civil magistrates being ordained of God, subjection in all lawful things commanded by them ought to be yielded by us in the Lord, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
The Resurrection
The bodies of men after death return to dust, but their spirits return immediately to God; the righteous to rest with Him; the wicked to be reserved under darkness to the judgment. At the last day, the bodies of all the dead, both just and unjust, will be raised.
The Judgment
God hath appointed a day, wherein He will judge the world by Jesus Christ, when everyone shall receive according to his deeds; the wicked shall go away into everlasting punishment and the righteous into everlasting life.

Leader Bio:
James S. Hall Jr. was born in Marion, South Carolina, the son of a preacher James S. Hall Sr. and homemaker mother Eliza Thompson Hall. At an early age he realized that God had a special call on his life. The youngest of four children, (three sisters, one sister Dorothy Hall Canady survives), he recognized by age 9 that he was anointed to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ and by age 18 publicly surrendered to God. From that time forward, his spiritual life has been a journey of struggles, successes and an every growing faith in the Lord. Pastor Hall attended elementary and high school in Marion County, S. C. after which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Bachelor of Divinity degree in Theology at Morris College in Sumter, S.C. In high school, He was President of the NFA (New Farmers of America), as well as President of the Marion County High School Council. He is the recipient of honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees from Morris College, Fuller Normal School Greenville, S.C. and A.M.E. Seminary Monrovia, West Africa. He also attended special training at Temple University in Group Dynamics and Psychology. During his sixty-six years of preaching he has been greatly blessed serving as Pastor of Mount Rona Baptist Church Florence S.C. (1953-1957), Rafting Creek Baptist Church Sumter, S.C. (1953-1957), and Springfield Baptist Church Greenville, S.C. (1957-1963). He also was Pastor of Morris Chapel Baptist Church Philadelphia, PA (1963-1969).
In November 1969, Triumph Baptist Church was organized with sixty-three members at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. From that time, God has continued to honor the prayers of those Charter Members. As a result of his leadership and their faithfulness, Triumph Baptist Church has experienced tremendous growth in the study of God’s word, evangelistic outreach and economic empowerment. More than 5000 souls have been saved. Economically the church has impacted the community with the Credit Union, provided residential housing and a supermarket. Plans are underway for the development for Senior Housing and Family Life Center. During his spiritual pilgrimage, God has richly blessed Pastor with a loving family and congregation. He is the proud parent of four children; two daughters, Cathy and Wanda and two sons, James Anthony and Phillip. He also is the proud grandfather of three grandsons, four granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. Pastor s oldest daughter The Reverend Cathy Johnson serves as Assistant Pastor at Triumph Baptist Church and youngest son The Reverend Philip Hall serves as Pastor of Love Missionary Baptist Church of Philadelphia.
Pastor Hall has a long history of community involvement stemming back to his active participation in the Civil rights Movement. While pastoring in South Carolina, he served as President of Local PUSH, Vice President of South Carolina State Education and Missionary Convention, Vice President of South Carolina State NAACP, and local President of CORE Greenville, S.C. After moving to Philadelphia he was President of Little Neighborhood Schools, Treasure of Wade Cable Company, President of the Baptist Minister’s Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity and Moderator of the Eastern Keystone Baptist Association, Vice President and President of the Pennsylvania Baptist Convention. Currently he serves as CEO of Triumph Development Community Corporation and President of Victory Village. He has been the recipient of numerous awards most recently the Unity Global Award and Legend of Civil Rights Award. Pastor Hall’s testimony is simple yet special, to serve the Lord with all his strength and all his might.
Pastor looks to the future with great hope and expectation as the Lord moves he and his congregation from Victory to Victory. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.-1 Corinthians 15:57-58

Triumph Baptist Church History
On November 11, 1969 Pastor Hall and sixty-three (63) committed Christians met in the basement of Mt. Sinai Tabernacle Church at 28th and Lehigh Avenue with the purpose of praying and seeking God’s face in the organization of a new church. At this meeting, six other ministers attended. They were Reverends William Anderson, E.A. Walker, J. I. Philips, John White, B.J. Small and Lester C. Smith. These ministers came to give support and advice in the structuring of the newly organized church. Rev. William Anderson presided. The 63-chartered members, who were in the organizational meeting, came with letters from their former churches and were committed to the establishment of this newly organized church.
At this meeting, three names were suggested for the new Church: Beacon, Triune and Triumph. The name Triumph was unanimously accepted. It rang clear that it gave hope for the struggles through which we were passing. Since the word triumph meant victory, the members decided to use “Victory” as a greeting and we adopted “Victory in Jesus” as the theme song for the new church.
Pastor James S. Hall, Jr. was elected as the Pastor of Triumph Baptist for life. After encouraging words from the ministers who attended, Pastor Hall gave an overview of the kind of ministries the Triumph Baptist Church would embrace. The emphasis was on evangelism (soul winning) and discipleship (training). He was very clear that he would not follow the traditional path that was typical of most established churches, but would search the Bible for biblical reasons for ministries that the church would carry on. At this meeting, persons for the Deacon and Trustee ministry were chosen. Appointments were made for three other heads of ministries such as Usher, Choir and superintendent of the church school. The first ministries started were the Daycare Center and the Triumph Baptist Federal Credit Union.
At this first meeting, financial pledges were made which amounted to a little more than $5,000. An offering of $1,100 was given that night and was banked in the name of the newly organized church by Brother Willie Walker and Brother Robert Middleton, Chairmen of the Trustee Board.
We worshipped for four Sundays at Mt. Sinai Tabernacle jointly and on the first Sunday night in December 1969, we came to 16th & Wingohocking Street to occupy the Mt. Herman Church of God building which had been vacated by a white congregation. We were led to this facility by Rev. Joseph Gilmore, a precious friend and dear brother. Here we stayed, here we have ministered, here we have witnessed, here we have grown and here we have been blessed by the power of the Almighty God! Since we’ve been established at this place, we have initiated outreach ministries that have impacted the surrounding communities and have won many souls to Jesus Christ.
Reflections
On February 18, 1978, fire destroyed Triumph Baptist Church. We had to regroup and rebuild. For three years, we were out of our home church and we worshipped at the Boys and Girls Club on Wayne Avenue. Our Church School was held in 15 homes of members. In March of 1981, the building was rebuilt and we once again worshipped in our own Church on the first Sunday in March. Since that time, we’ve witnessed the power and presence of God in a mighty way.
New Purchases
By God’s grace, we continued to grow and later we purchased 2 houses on 16th Street and demolished those to build an educational wing that later housed our Daycare, Christian School, Senior Citizen ministry, a food distribution ministry, and an off-street chapel for small weddings, meetings and worship overflow. We purchased property at Broad and Wingohocking Streets, which is now our Shop and Bag Supermarket. We purchased a building at 18th & Courtland, which was originally going to be the site for our new church. But, God lead us to build our new edifice at Germantown and Hunting Park, and we have been enjoying the beauty and comfort of our new edifice since October, 2007.
The St. Paul’s Baptist Church of Brooklyn, New York, and the Triumph Baptist Church formed a partnership to purchase a hotel site in Mannheim, PA, Lancaster County. This was to be a hotel/resort center. This property was later sold and the benefit from selling this property was used for the purchase of our Germantown and Hunting Park location.
Deeded Property
The School District of Philadelphia has deeded the property adjacent to our parking lot to Triumph Baptist Church, which will be (in the near future) our Family Life Center.
Support of other Ministries
We support the Foreign Mission Bureau of the Progressive Baptist Convention and the Foreign Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention. We are monthly supporters of the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention and we also support and feed approximately 500 people annually in Haiti. We provide regular support to missions, ministries and churches pastored by “sons of our Church”. Triumph also contributes annually to several Black colleges. We are life members of the NAACP and we have endeavored to support every cause that would benefit humanity with special emphasis on helping our children.
Victory Through Christ
Over the past 40 years, from November 11, 1969 to present day, the Triumph Baptist Church has seen many victories. We’ve had our many struggles and trials, but they came to make us strong and victorious. Our motto is “Victory through Christ” and our theme scripture is…”but thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”(I Corinthians 15:57). From 63 members in the beginning to more than 5,400 members today…thanks be to God for the

Help me to avoid every sin
Thanks to Thee, O God, that I have risen today, To the rising of this life itself; may it be to Thine own glory, O God of every gift, and to the glory, aid Thou my soul. With the aiding of Thine own mercy, even as I clothe my body with wool, cover Thou my soul with the shadow of Thy wing. Help me to avoid every sin, and the source of every sin to forsake, and as the mist scatters on the crest of the hills, may each ill haze clear from my soul, O God.
