Who we are
Bridport Unitarians – All faiths and none
Here is the quietness for the healing of our spirits;
Here is the contemplation for the nurturing of our minds;
Here is fellowship for the warming of our souls and of the world around us;
Here we may take positive steps together which manifest love, compassion and generosity in everything.

Unitarian Chapel In The Garden History
As an independent congregation founded after the 1672 Great Ejection of non-conforming priests from their Church of England livings, we are a radical, forward-looking group.
In 1742 the then minister, Rev Thomas Collins split the congregation by refusing to confirm the divinity of Christ and 200 members left to form the Congregational chapel now the Arts Centre.
The New Meeting, our current chapel, was built by the then chair of trustees, his grandson Thomas Collins Colfox in 1798 on the site of the Crown Inn replacing the Old Meeting off Barrack Street.
In the latter half of the 18th Century and quite illegally, members of the Chapel, being the leading merchants of the town, took over the Bridport Corporation (the Town Council) without complying with the Corporation and Test Acts' obligations to take communion in the Church of England once a year.
In the 21st Century this spirit of non-conformity is alive and well and we welcome people from all faiths or none to explore the common ground and create a new spirituality for Bridport.

Love me, Lord, just for today
Lord, for tomorrow and its needs, I do not pray; Keep me, my God, from stain of sin just for today. Let me both diligently work, And duly pray. Let me be kind in word and deed, Just for today. Let me be slow to do my will, Prompt to obey; Help me to sacrifice myself Just for today. And if today my tide of life should ebb away, Give me thy sacraments divine, Sweet Lord today. So for tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, But keep me, guide me, love me, Lord, Just for today.
