Unity Center Of Peace History

Unity Center Of Peace (formerly Unity of Woodinville) was established in the fall of 2001 as an affirmative, intentional action step for peace. Co-founders Revs. Nat and Suzanne Carter responded to a deep need for spiritual community after the tragedy of September 11th. From the very beginning, the culture of this community was formed and informed by a willingness to actively participate in learning more about how to be the peace we wished to see in the world.

On October 28, 2001, we had our first meeting. There were about 12 of us, and we met at the historical Monte Villa Farmhouse at the corner of Bothell and Woodinville. Since then, we have been housed at various locations in the Woodinville area (The Chateau at Bothell Landing, The Sammamish Valley Grange, the 7th Day Adventist Church), and currently we reside near the very heart of downtown Woodinville.

One of the first books we studied together in Sunday lessons was The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz. The four agreements offered us practical wisdom teachings consistent with developing a culture of peacemaking. The four agreements are: 1) Be impeccable in your speech 2) Don’t take things personally 3) Don’t make assumptions 4) Always do your best.

We took these teachings to heart. We quoted these agreements to one another in the context of our developing relationships and shared stories of how we were able to practice these in our lives. It was apparent that this was a community willing to deeply reflect on the teachings and practice of being who we had come here to be.

Nat and Suzanne served as part time ministers. After a year and a half, they accepted a full time position at Unity of Denver. Since then we have been blessed with a number of gifted teachers and Unity ministers. We have deep gratitude for the contributions of Rev. Patty Becker, Rev. Linda Spencer, Rev. Ann Marie Davis and Rev. Tony Roebuck as well as Sheik Jamal Rahman and Rabbi Ted Falcon.

From the very beginning, it seemed this church had a life of its own, an energy, a spirit yearning to be expressed. Over the years, we have come to respect the energy and action of this spirit and to know that all of us participate in the creation of this ministry together. The contribution of each individual in service and inspiration creates this ministry. We think this is a healthy evolution into an empowered spiritual community.

Our spiritual studies have been grounded in the Unity tradition. Here at Unity Center Of Peace, we say we are “Culturally Christian and Spiritually Unlimited.” That is, we recognize the spiritual value in the peaceful teachings of all faith traditions while not becoming dogmatic adherents of any one approach. Because of our deep desire to learn practical skills for a more peaceful life, we also embrace the teachings of Nonviolent Communication, the work of Marshall Rosenberg, and other studies that promote a better understanding of ourselves and others.

In our years together, Unity Center Of Peace has actively responded to numerous community, national and international needs. In addition to our annual Heifer Project drive, we have supported the Free Wheelchair Project, Hands to Hearts, Mercy Corp, and Hurricane Katrina relief. Locally, we have supported several food banks, Woodinville Children’s Home, Matthew House, Issaquah Baby Corner, Tent City, Warm for Winter among others.

We have offered numerous workshops and trainings in Nonviolent Communication as well as classes in spiritual growth, meditation and prayer. We have sponsored women’s retreats, spiritual cinema, concerts, interfaith series and special events. It has been an honor to work with so many committed, dedicated, talented people over the years and behold how this community has grown. We look forward to how we will become more and more of the peace we wish to see in the world.
